Am I correct in assuming the layer references a feature service you're trying to edit? If the feature service is running behind a firewall, ArcGIS Online won't have access to it. Thus, you can't edit it. Some operations, like displaying the layer do work, because the URL to the service is accessible to the browser, which is also running behind the firewall. Thanks, Mike

The layers referenced in web maps of ArcGIS Online generally reference services, either running on arcgis server or hosted in ArcGIS Online. Because they are services, if they are updated, the updates will be reflected in all applications that access them. Hope this helps, Mike

I don't know how to do this programmatically, but in ArcGIS.com, when you add an item that references a secured ArcGIS Server, it is possible to embed the credentials of the service with the item. So it is possible on the item. I don't believe the credentials get stored in the web map, however. Thanks, Mike

Yes, any ArcGIS Server version 10 or earlier will have this legend problem. The fix will go out tonight. @Jerry, can you share the web map you are having trouble changing symbols, renaming, transparency issues? Thanks, Mike

There is no control in the ArcGIS.com map viewer. You might be able to open the map in ArcGIS Explorer Online and tweak it. I seem to recall Explorer Online had some ability here but am not positive. (www.arcgis.com/explorer) Thanks, Mike

Shawn, The problem is with ArcGIS servers that can't generate legends for map services. This capability was introduced into ArcGIS Server at 10 SP1. So, ArcGIS Online has to do something special to generate the legend. This is what's not working. We're looking at the problem. I suspect it will get fixed by the end of the week. Thanks, Mike

Rick, Yes, I can see that problem. We'll address it today or by the end of the week. In general, there seems to be issues with admin control over items and groups. Thanks, Mike

What are you trying to publish? If you want to publish a map, you need to create a service definition first. You can step through the normal publishing process, and instead of publishing to a server or online, you can write out a SD file. Then you can publish this file. Make sure you author this file for publishing to online. There are differences between SD files authored for ArcGIS Server and those authored for ArcGIS Online. Thanks, Mike
