There is no way to group items in the legend with the out of the box template. You might be able to customize this app yourself and deploy it to your web server... Thanks, Mike

What coordinate system is your data currently stored in? I'd suggest transforming it to Web Mercator Auxillary Sphere first. Thanks, Mike

No, there is no export ability. Full support for web maps in ArcGIS Desktop is coming at version 10.1. Thanks Mike

I'm not sure why you are seeing an error. I believe the file should open. However, even if it were to successfully open, ArcGIS Desktop doesn't support all content in a web map. So your shapefiles won't be drawn. This is addressed at version 10.1, releasing soon. Mike

The feature services also have to be shared publicly if you don't want people to have to sign in. There is security at every level: layer, web map, and web app. Thanks, Mike

Can you elaborate on what you are doing? Are you publishing that data as a service? If you're creating a hosted tiled service, it can easily exceed your available storage space if you are caching it at all scale levels. You can end up with millions of tiles and terrabytes of data in the form of the tiled images, if you are caching the full range of scales. Even if you only have simple lines on the map. Mike

I can't see your services in the map. Is your server publicly accessible? it seems not. Mike

This item publicizes a web service that is available for developers to use. For example, a developer might pass one or more points to the service and have them projected. Or pass in a line and get back its length. It is not meant for plugging in and extending the map viewer of arcgis.com. The map viewer, I believe, already utilizes this service when measuring lengths and areas... Thanks, Mike

Web mapping application is a generic item type. For instance, a local city may want to publicize their pothole reporting website. They would do so using this type. Others may have created an application they want to share and attach code to so that other people can modify/deploy the application themselves, like this one: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=fa8a71c3039846c3b97c0e0f545dcda9 We also happen to use the same item type to store our template applications we host that people can drop a web map into. You can publish these to ArcGIS Online and they're hosted for you. Alternatively, you could download the code for the application, make modifications, and then deploy a customized version to your website. It's a quick way to get a web application up and running. What would be the use of attaching code for a web map or a feature service? Mike

Layer packages can't be directly added to a web map. The things you can add to a web map are: ArcGIS Server services WMS services ArcGIS Online hosted services (currently in beta testing) Files that can be imported into a map are: Shapefiles CSVs files GPX files KML files So, the way you would get your data to display on a web map are: Publish your data to ArcGIS Server. Publish your data to ArcGIS Online via an organizational subscription (fee based service due to release in 3rd quarter) Create shapefiles of your data and import them onto a map. Due to browser limitations, you can only load about 1000 features onto the map. hope this helps, Mike
