Hey George! No, machine name is NSQL, the SQL instance name is MSSQLSERVER. Trying the IP address of NSQL and the host name NSQL gave me the same message. But that's interesting that Create Enterprise Geodatabase seems to just ask for the instance. How does it know what host to look for? And in this case the host name and instance name are different. Maybe I have to specify the instance name in a string like NSQL\MSSQLSERVER, like further down in the tool help. Well, neither NSQL\MSSQLSERVER or 192.168.3.222\MSSQLSERVER worked. The tool help warns that case sensitive instance names are not supported. Is that what I have? I've already had to punch holes in the Windows firewall for license service and map service. Add ArcGIS Server and Windows Firewall Maybe I'll look again at the firewall on NSQL. Taking the Windows firewall down on NSQL didn't help with either Create Enterprise Geodatabase or Telnet 1433. one of my available client machines is the virtual machine NSMAP, it's running Winodws Server 2012 R2, and apparently telnet is not available.

I have new hardware running SQL Server 2012 R2 and I'm trying to create my first Enterprise geodatabase on it but all I can get back using the two client machines I have running Desktop 10.3.1 and SQL Native Client is "Failure to access the DBMS server" Don't understand this because I didn't have this problem with my install at a different location a couple months ago, and I just completed the instructor led course Deploying and Maintaining a Multiuser Geodatabase earlier this week. My DBA set up the new servers as virtual servers on the same unit. From my DBA I got: NSQL 192.168.3.222 Administrator: ********* SQL Server instance MSSQLSERVER sa: ********* NSMAP 192.168.3.223 Administrator: ************ But when I try to create my first geodatabase, I get Failure to access the DBMS server. If the SQL Native Communications driver were missing, or wrong, I think I would get a different error message, something about communication to the SQL server. (How does one tell if the SQL Native client is installed on a client PC? Don't see it in Data Sources.) I wondered if Windows firewall was blocking, but I turned off public and private firewall temporarily on the client NSMAP and the SQL Server NSSQL, no change. Also tried the trick to modify the host file on the client machine to resolve the SQL host name, no change. I pulled the Create Enterprise Geodatadata tool results into a python window to make it easier to repeat iterations with minor changes. But it also makes it easy to copy and paste my attempt as text. >>> arcpy.CreateEnterpriseGeodatabase_management(database_platform="SQL_Server", instance_name="MSSQLSERVER", database_name="Orthos", account_authentication="DATABASE_AUTH", database_admin="sa", database_admin_password="**********", sde_schema="SDE_SCHEMA", gdb_admin_name="sde", gdb_admin_password="sde", tablespace_name="", authorization_file="C:/Program Files (x86)/ESRI/License10.3/sysgen/keycodes") Runtime error Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> File "c:\program files (x86)\arcgis\desktop10.3\arcpy\arcpy\management.py", line 4857, in CreateEnterpriseGeodatabase raise e ExecuteError: Failure to access the DBMS server Failed to execute (CreateEnterpriseGeodatabase). Maybe my DBA or I have made a typo. But this has me wondering now does the db account sde need to be created first? How does the RDMS know that the sde account has a password of sde? Or is there something wrong with my network topology. I can't ping the SQL server from my Desktop or from the neighboring server NSMAP, but I can Remote Desktop to both NSQL and NSMAP.

Hey, thanks! But it gave me the same error message as the one I found. I thought I had the wrong one. Using the 64 bit version, I got "SQL Server 2012 Native Client Setup Interrupted". The 32 bit one doesn't even get started, so that's more evidence I have the correct one. I don't understand what my problem is. I've installed this twice on other machines this week, and a bunch more last month. Is it already installed? Don't see it in services. Should I see it in data sources if it were installed? I must have already installed it because when I tried Create Enterprise Geodatabase, I got simply "Failure to access the DBMS server", and nothing about the SQL Server Client being wrong or missing.

Thanks, but it didn't work for me. I have a real small list of downloads at my own My ESRI because I generally get downloads from the OTSGS, and it looks like they changed their passwords. But now I see how that's supposed to work. That's the way my morning has gone. Everything I have tried to do has been blocked by passwords and insufficient permissions. Folks in the next office thought I was having a fight with someone what with all the cussing and yelling.

Thanks for the ideas. I just used Action>New Rule>Port>Specified local ports>6080>Allow the Connection>Applied to all in Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on the server machine, and the Add ArcGIS Server works for a client machine. Both are running 10.3.1. Is that too much permission?

I don't know why the first two in your link should work. I'm not sure why you would think it is not a firewall issue. I'm talking about the SampleWorldCities map service that appears by default after installing Server. The service seems to be using the defaults. There are no authentications set on the service, https/ssi are not involved. Simply adding the service in ArcCatalog as user or administrator with http://localhost:6080/arcgis works fine when I remote desktop to the server. On a client machine, Add ArcGIS Server doesn't work for any of the urls I tried, but it connects easily if I turn off Windows Firewall on the server temporarily. Shouldn't I concentrate on making a firewall exception for port 6080?Already this week I had to work on the firewall to get license service through the firewall.

I have a new ArcServer 10.3.1 installation on a Windows 2012R2 server. I went through installing a new site and added user and admin ArcGIS server connections in ArcCatalog 10.3.1 on the server itself, and was able to preview the sample map service, SampleWorldCities. I thought I was on my way, but when I tried Add ArcGIS Server on a client Windows 10 PC with Desktop 10.3.1 ArcCatalog on a network without a domain to add a user connection, I couldn't seem to guess at the connection url. Tried http://servername:6080/arcgis/services, http://serverIP:6080/arcgis/services, http://NSMAP.Workgroupname.local:6080/arcgis/services and a few others, like putting /rest on the end, but they all failed. But in the first two forms, they took longer to fail, and got a message "We were unable to connect to:..... Error:Proxy server got bad address from remote server (verify the server is running). But then I had an idea, Crap! Is this another Windows Firewall problem on the server? https://community.esri.com/thread/174271 I turned off the server's firewall private and public profile temporarily, and the client PC hooked up right away with http://servername:6080/arcgis/services. What windows firewall settings do I need to change to fix this, and where the heck is the ESRI documentation on this stuff?

Thanks. I changed the Vendor Port to 1234, now I have a local license, but not client. So I guess I need to make an exception in Windows Firewall for 1234. Is that inbound or outbound? I just used Action>New Rule>Port>Specified local ports>1234>Allow the Connection>Applied to all, and it works for a client machine. Is that too much permission?

Now licenses aren't available to the host either. Here's a mystery, License Server Administrator shows on the status line NOT RUNNING, and the Start button doesn't work to get the service started. Yet, when I look at services, both ArcGIS License Manager and FlexNet Licensing Service are running. Did I mess with service.txt too much?

The other admin surprised me by stopping in on Monday before leaving for his river trip. He saw his mistake and corrected it. Now the license host has a fixed IP address. But I still can't get a license delivered to a client PC. I flushed the DNS cache and tried adding a fixed PORT in service.txt, but now the client Administrator seems to fail quicker. I've already tried to open ports 27000 to 27009 inbound and outbound on the host. service.txt now looks like SERVER this_host ANY 27000 VENDOR ARCGIS PORT=27000 USE_SERVER FEATURE ACT ARCGIS 1 permanent 1 vendor_info=7KNJDRHFHBK4CFDMJ214 SIGN="052E ABFC 32DD \ 2473 DEFD E276 4BF3 E0DB 87EB 2203 5A30 C014 19A1 C35E 2154 \ 08B1 9460 A2B9 6701 DC4D CAF2 E2FE 1347 0E36 90FA 4F3B E864 \ BEC8 D3A2 A615"

This virtual server was set up two weeks ago by my co admin. and this week he's off floating the Owyhee. There's some network topology here I don't get. His docs say server NSMAP is at 192.168.3.223. I can remote desktop log on to NSMAP by using the name, not the IP address. Ipconfig on the server shows an ipv4 of 192.168.3.43. But on a client Windows 10 PC, I can't ping either IP, and nslookup of 3.43 or 3.233 seems to jump to google: nslookup 192.168.3.223 Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com Address: 8.8.8.8 *** google-public-dns-a.google.com can't find 192.168.3.223: Non-existent domain But on the client PC, ArcGIS administer >Desktop>Change>Browse will display NSMAP in computer you want to connect to: and Remote Desktop works with the host name, but neither IP. Turning the windows firewall off temporarily on the host did not help with connecting with ArcGIS Administrator.

I want to replace my old 10.2.2 license server running on a old XP with 10.3.1 License Server running on a new server running Windows Server 2012R2. On the Server 2012, the License Server Administer shows that the provision file was authorized and my license are available, service is started. Desktop 10.3.1 locally on the Server machine gets served a license successfully. But on my network, client PCs running 10.3.1 and 10.2 can't get a license but they can find the license server host on a network browse. I used Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on the LM host to open 27000-27009 inbound and outbound, my Service.txt file for License 10.3 looks like it is using 27000: SERVER this_host ANY 27000 VENDOR ARCGIS USE_SERVER FEATURE ACT ARCGIS 1 permanent 1 vendor_info=7KNJDRHFHBK4CFDMJ214 SIGN="052E ABFC 32DD \ 2473 DEFD E276 4BF3 E0DB 87EB 2203 5A30 C014 19A1 C35E 2154 \ 08B1 9460 A2B9 6701 DC4D CAF2 E2FE 1347 0E36 90FA 4F3B E864 \ BEC8 D3A2 A615" Client PCs just get the old "'YourCrappyHost' does not have a valid License Manager." message, but somewhat slower after I messed with the firewall. I'm out of tricks. How do I fix this?

The DBA added the user as a database owner in SQL. Now the user reports he is is unable to add a new FC within an existing feature dataset(must be the owner error message), but he can create a new feature dataset, then create feature classes within that. So I use I still need to tweak or create a role or run the Create User tool. Update: The SQL DBA used ArcCatalog to delete the feature dataset that the user couldn't edit or append, and recreated it, loading it with the same data from outside the Enterprise gdb that I had imported. Now the user is able to edit, append, and is satisfied for now. Was this problem caused because I created the egdb with my login as owner and imported the feature datasets before I added any other user account as owner also?
