Garnet: I am extrapolating from the behavior that I am seeing with Oracle, so I'm only guessing that SQL Server will behave the same way. I copy the .SDE connection file from an ArcGIS Desktop v10.0 machine (or folder if you had v10.0 installed on the same machine previously). If I do not connect to the database in ArcCatalog I only get a limited number of items in the drop-down context menu (Geodatabase Connection Properties and Administration are not available).  Once I connect to the database, Geodatabase Connection Properties and Administration are now available.  At this point I would select Geodatabase Connection Properties to select a different version to use in my connection to the SDE database. If I create a brand new connection in ArcCatalog at v10.2, Geodatabase Connection Properties and Administration are available whether I am connected to the database or not. ... View more

Christopher: How about opening the connection to SQL Server and then see if the version manager appears? I had a similar issue with Oracle SDE connections that I copied from v10.0 to v10.2.  I was unable to see some of the connection menus in v10.2 until I opened the SDE connection. ... View more

Dominique: Does your response mean you would need to duplicate the data in an ESRI feature class where attachments are enabled? If that is the case, that is not desirable as you could be duplicating a large amount of data that is already stored in a different robust RDBMS. ... View more

Alternate solution: Do you use ArcGIS Server at your organization?  If so, you could try creating a web based FlexViewer application that can duplicate the business needs of your ArcReader users.  FlexViewer applications just need configuration file changes.  This is what my organization is doing to move an entire department from an ArcReader project to a FlexViewer application.  As such, we do not need to install ArcReader software on over 80 computers any more. ... I'm not a Database Administrator (DBA), but the DBAs at my organization are always trying to minimize unnecessary data duplication which seems what is occurring with the attachments if you already have the data stored in another format other than feature classes that recognize attachments. Don't you think it would be more efficient if attachments could just be created in the native format that the original attachment files were stored in? ... View more

How about having each user create his own mxd using their own version of the layer you want to use Editor Tracking on?  This should at least solve the problem of only joe being tracked.  Make sure that the layer with joe's version is not copied into any of these new mxds because it would be carrying his credentials along. ... But did you create your own version to edit the data and replace that version in the mxd and save the mxd after making the version change.  Unless you actually change the version in the mxd to your own, it will always use joe's SDE credentials. ... View more

Unless the 2 other users changed the version in the mxd from joe's to their own, they will be making changes as joe.  This is 1 reason why sharing an mxd that can edit SDE is dangerous as you are providing other users access to someone elses SDE version. ... View more

My organization tested Editor Tracking in Oracle 11g and it worked as expected.  Maybe it is an issue with SQL Server 2012.  I would log an incident with ESRI if no one using SQL Server 2012 responds to your post. ... View more

Might you be using operating system authentication for tracking and even though you have 3 users with different versions in SDE, they are all logged into the same computer with the same credentials which is what Editor Tracking is using? ... View more
