I am working on a python script to process mxd files. I would like to only process mxd files that are newer than a specific date. I have been able to compare time from now to a specific date but it keeps changing from day to day. I would actually just like to compare the date saved to a specific date. Is this possible with some type of date comparison (date > some date)?

Are you going to perform this operation often with data updates from excel that need to be added to the shapefile (or file geodatabase feature class if you go with that format)? If so, I would script this process out.

You could try python scripting to convert the Excel data to a table and then using joins to get the data from Excel into the shapefile. I would also suggest moving the data to a file geodatabase and performing the data manipulation there as it is less buggy than shapefiles.

Has Background Geoprocessing been identified as something you can check? Maybe it is disabled in ArcCatalog where the tool works and enabled in ArcMap (Default setting) where it fails?

Are you looking to remove these items in the legend because they fall outside of a specific view? If so, ESRI has out-of-the-box functionality at v10.2 that can remove legend items automatically that are not in the view.

I would look to see if python can accomplish this task. Try searching the ESRI forums with keywords such as python, update legend items. If you don't know python, it does not have a steep learning curve.

I guess it depends how you are running the python script. I personally like to use IDLE when testing my scripts. In order to get the python scripts to run as 32-bit in this environment, I had to add a shortcut to pythonw.exe residing at C:\Python27\ArcGIS10.2 to my Windows SendTo menu at C:\Users\"Windows User Name"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo. I then right click on a .py file and navigate to SendTo and it allows me to pick this shortcut. When you run the script, it should tell you the mode it is running in at the top.

You'll need to run the python script with the 32-bit version. I have Windows 2008 Servers that are 64-bit with both ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server software installed. I tried running python scripts after the install, but it was throwing the same types of errors. I then checked and saw it was using the 64-bit version of python. Once I made the script use 32-bit python it worked.

Can you tell whether your script is using the 32-bit or 64-bit python version?

Carl: It seems as though you might have encountered a bug with the replaceWorkspaces() method and I would not be confident in a timely fix of a bug. The replaceWorkspaces() method seems like a more universal resourcing method where all the data originates in the same database. I had to resource data from multiple databases with multiple user connections to the databases. I would suggest using the replaceDataSource method where you could interrogate each connection and then build a new connection file (.sde). If a new .sde connection file has already been built then just use the new .sde file (This is what I did). I used the .sde file with replaceDataSource and I handled my imagery with the UpdateLayer method since I was no longer storing the imagery in SDE. This would be a workaround to the errors you are getting with the replaceWorkspaces() method.

I think you might want to look into attachments for the storage of associated images in the file geodatabase, as I think this will work well in a mapservice when serving it over the web.

How about trying to use the UpdateLayer method on your ArcGIS Image Service layers? You could pre-process the ArcGIS Image Service lyr files for your upgraded environment and then run this method using these new lyr files to replace the old layers. This is how I accomplished something similar to you where I had to convert image layers originating in SDE with raster mosaic datasets. I found there to be no other conversion method that would work with this type of scenario.
