In T3G 2017, Anita Palmer had participants try out the new Story Map Crowdsource configurable app. A Crowdsource story map is easy to set up and easy to contribute to. What are some examples of using Crowdsource story maps for student learning? What are some ideas for teaching teachers about Crowdsource story maps?

Esri Alum

I'll start with an example from an Esri Colleague in the Boston area (Tanya Bigos), who did a GeoMentor project with a four-week after school enrichment program at an elementary school. Tanya created a 'How are we Connected?' crowdsource app (http://arcg.is/2imugHy or full link), and asked Esri colleagues and others to contribute entries. According to Tanya, the goal was to see how far around the world they could move during the four-week program. She made a bet with students that they would get a submission from every continent (except Antarctica). They ended up with over 200 approved contributions, and managed to hit every continent--including Antarctica! Tanya reported, "The (older) kids were pretty amazed that we went around the world in just a few weeks, and all of them loved exploring the different locations - I think the running of the bulls may have been the favorite but exploring the map and the new entries was a highlight every time!"

Because the app was going to be exposed publicly, Tanya set it to require a moderator (herself) to approve all submissions. There was nothing contributed that was inappropriate for kids but she didn’t want to take the chance. During the peak time, she checked in at least daily and it took a few minutes to run through the contributions and make sure they were fine to approve. Only approved entries were actually displayed.
