Introduction
As the new Reality Engine finalizes its implementation in Site Scan for ArcGIS, the ReCap mesh engine will soon be retired. In November 2023, ReCap will no longer be available as a project default option in Site Scan. This blog highlights the differences between ReCap and the Reality Engine, discusses the Reality Engine as an alternative, and prompts a call to action to tell us if and why ReCap is important for your business.
Comparing ReCap and the Reality Engine
We understand that using the ReCap mesh engine may be an important part of your 3D mapping workflows because it offers different mesh formats than the new Reality Engine. See the table below for a comparison between ReCap and the Reality Engine capabilities.
Capability | Reality Engine | ReCap Engine |
View mesh output in Site Scan | Yes - in 3D scene with terrain basemap | Yes - model only |
High quality setting option | Yes | No |
Publish mesh to ArcGIS Online/Enterprise | Yes | No |
Export SLPK | Yes | No |
Export OBJ | Yes | Yes |
Export FBX | No | Yes |
Export RCM | No | Yes |
Export 3D Tiles | Coming soon | No |
Measurements in mesh view | Coming soon | No |
ReCap generates two unique mesh formats, FBX and RCM. If these are files that you use regularly in your 3D mapping and analysis workflows, we are curious to hear more about how they support your business. Please submit a brief survey so we can better understand what features or enhancements we can explore with the Reality Engine. Esri and Autodesk are close partners, and we want to ensure that the needs of our shared users are met.
Use the Reality Engine
If you have not yet processed meshes with the Reality Engine, we encourage you to give it a try. In the processing settings, under Mesh Engine, choose a quality setting to process the mesh in the Reality Engine.
All other mesh options use the Reality Engine.
Alternatively, opt into the Reality Engine beta 2 to generate all data products using the Reality Engine, such as your orthomosaic, DSM/DTM, point cloud, and mesh. The beta also allows you to generate an OBJ mesh using the Reality Engine. To learn more about the Reality Engine beta, see this blog.
Use the Reality Engine beta to process all outputs with the Reality Engine, as well as the option to create an OBJ mesh.
Once finished processing, we hope you enjoy the increased quality of your mesh produced by the Reality Engine.
