Scene Viewer New Functionality- How to Edit to Upload 3D models in Web Scene?

Hello Scene Viewer Team, 

We're very excited for the new capability to upload 3D Models into the scene viewer. We have lots of OBJ files and are excited to test it out. 

I watched your video tutorial in the the ArcGIS Online June 2023 Update announcement but it's uncear how you got to this setting/functionality:

It seems you need to have an editable scene layer to start(?) 

When we try to create a scene layer from AGOL > Create Item> Scene layer it appears OBJ files aren't supported: 

That being said, we're trying to understand how to get started/set up a layer like to to add our OBJ files too. (Apologies if this is an obvious answer, we're just dabbling into the world of 3D GIS now)

Dear Amanda,

wow, great you are already looking into trying it out.

It is a prerequisite for this new functionality to create a new scene layer with associated feature layer that has the GLB format enabled. This option enables the new capability for format conversion that was also added as beta to ArcGIS Online just yesterday. Here is a step by step recipe to get started:

Prepare data using latest ArcGIS Pro 3.1:

1. Create a 3D object feature class in a file geodatabase, see ArcGIS Pro documentation "Create a 3D object feature class"
2. Add storage format GLB (Khronos Group glTF binary) that enables support for uploading models on the web, see ArcGIS Pro documentation "Modify a 3D object feature class"
   a. Open Analysis > Tools
   b. Search for and open Add 3D Formats to multipatch
   c. Add .glb and run the tool
3. Create a zip file of the file geodatabase containing only your new 3D object feature class

Publish data using your organization on ArcGIS Online:

1. Upload the .zip file and publish as a feature layer, see ArcGIS Online documentation "Publish the contents of a file geodatabase"
2. From the published feature layer publish the scene layer, see ArcGIS Online documentation "Publish hosted scene layers"
3. Enable editing on the feature layer as appropriate for your workflows, see ArcGIS Online documentation "Manage hosted feature layer editing"

That is a great capability and I was able to do it.

The process is a bit long. The best thing is to have a ready template to be used inside ArcGIS Online, and skip the Pro part.

great to hear. And yes, these steps are only needed while we are in beta. We have it on the roadmap to support a ready to use workflow through ArcGIS Online - it will be more or less as you suggest.

Hi Veronika,

Does this feature work in ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0? We tried the steps you have mentioned in our portal. We get the error "Something unexpected caused the tool to fail" when uploading the zip file to the portal.

Hi Mohamed,

this is not supported in ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0. We are working on landing a complete workflow with an Enterprise version to release in 2024.
