Resources/Real World Examples of how Overlay Analysis Tools have been used

I have been looking for resources or real world examples of how some of the Overlay Analysis tools are used.
The tools are:Identity, Symmetrical Difference and Update

I have looked through many Esri Press books, but most of the overlay tools in these books are the commonly used ones, such as       Dissolve, Union, Clip and Merge.

Here's a presentation from the 2010 User Conference "Fundamentals of GIS Analysis: Overlay" ... It could probably be updated, but the content applies to all versions.
