Problem with "Add Surface Information" and "Interpolate Shape"

The past couple of months, I've been getting a lot of crashes when I use these two tools.  If I run it in the background, it crashes in the background.  I can check the geoprocessing log file and at the end it says "ERROR 001143: Background server threw an exception."  If I run it in the foreground, ArcMap just crashes and there is not new log file.  Any ideas?
