I have downloaded the Integrated Transport Network (ITN) layer for UK roads.  I want to identify and count the number of true (at least three legs) intersections.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Anna,

You want to assign each node in the network it's "valency".

I'm assuming you've used productivity suit to import the data into a file geodatabase?

  1. Do a spatial join using the geoprocessing tool of roadlinks (RdLk) intersecting nodes (RdNd) setting join operation to JOIN_ONE_TO_MANY

  2. This creates a dataset with a row for each polyline intersecting a node

  3. You can then use the Frequency tool or summary statistics tool to count TARGET_FID, this will count the number of times a node was selected.

  4. This gives you a table where for each OBJECTID (refered to as TARGET_FID) has a count.

Thank you so much Duncan! I've been trying to work out how to do this for a while and I finally got it to work using your instructions!

Such a simple solution 👏 thank you.

Is there a tool that does the same in ArcPro (that works)?
