How to create a point grid for line transects in ArcGIS

I need to find out the easiest method of generating a point grid, with points at a uniform and specified distance from one another, along line transects and be able to have each point registered with an identifier and a lat/long to be uploaded into a GPS unit in order to conduct surveys for endangered species of plants.  Thanks...

Have you tried Hawth's tools? It is a free toolset with lots of helpful tools for environmental analysis.
