conversion of xy points to ascii

I have a file with 104 coordinates. I have converted these to both a shape file and a raster file which show up fine. I need to have these now in ASCII format. When I use the raster to ASCII tool however, the resulting ASCII file contains "-9999" for every cell, including the 104 which should have a value. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Did you explicitly set the cell size and extent within the Environments tab while creating the ASCII file?
