Problem when joining tables

I am trying to join a layer with a table using a common field in both of them, when I construct the join, and click "validate join" an error that says: "There was a problem creating the index on the table...." appears.

What might be the issue here?

The index may be stored in the feature class, do you have the write permission to the feature class or table that the layer points to?

I have write permission to both the feature class and the table.

BTW, what is meant by the index?
