Software update cycles today are shorter than ever.

Everyone wants the software tutorial they’re using to match the version of software they’re using. While this is a concern for self-learners, it is paramount for educators. Anyone teaching a group of students from term to term understands how frustrating it is when the book that worked great last semester now causes learning disruptions. Maybe a tool has been moved in the interface. Maybe exercise results no longer match what’s in the book.

The challenge for book publishers: Some educators/learners will update their software immediately upon release, and some will wait. At any given time, there will be people using widely varying versions.

Having a book that matches, or very closely matches, what students see and do with the software they’re learning makes for a more enjoyable learning experience.

Esri Press last year introduced a way to provide book revisions – full books, not supplements – between printings. We call it ‘InterEditions’ and here’s how it works. Following the publication of a print textbook, Esri Press will periodically publish updated editions in e-book format clearly labeled with the version of software with which it was tested. This will enable self-learners, educators and students options for matching the text to the version of software being used.

So now, whether you’re more conservative or progressive with your software updates, you can expect to have a book that closely matches. From time to time, you will see a new print edition publish. And until there’s an updated print book, you can now expect to see one or more digital full book updates.

InterEditions: more options to find an ArcGIS tutorial that most closely matches the version you have installed.

Besides continuing to offer authoritative books to support your use of Esri products and applications, we now offer:

  • Free e-book access for students: Students who have been impacted by campus closures can access any of our e-books via VitalSource for free through May 25, 2020. Those outside of the US, the United Kingdom, and Canada can contact us directly at esripress@esri.com.
  • Courseware options for select e-books: To support students and educators in a digital classroom environment, we’re introducing courseware options with our e-books available through the VitalSource platform. Students can easily identify which e-books have a software trial included and choose to either rent or purchase their e-textbook. Included instructions on how to activate the trial make it easy for you to start your coursework right away.
  • Starting in 2020, new ArcGIS Pro books will be published, based on the Summer release of ArcGIS Pro. These books will be ready for the Fall semester and will give students access to the latest information and resources. For example, Getting to Know ArcGIS Pro 2.6, GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 2.6, and Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Pro 2.6 Project Workbook, will be available for Fall 2020 classes; first in e-book formats then in print. Visit the Esri Press Books GeoNet Community, for more information.
  • GeoNet Community for Esri Press: Come hang out with us. Meet Esri Press staff. Meet authors. Exchange ideas with your peers using Esri Press books in classroom settings. See titles Esri Press is working on. Contribute to conversations about design and development of new instructive modalities. We want to hear from you. Join the newest GeoNet community: Esri Press Books.
  • Lindsey the GIS Professional: the first Esri Press offering for K-12 students, teachers, and parents, and the first in a series of STEAM-based career picture books, it includes fun, online activities as well as, teaching resources, including how it applies to educational standards (NGSS, C3, and international).

And we continue to offer all new titles (since 2015) in print and e-book formats, for purchase or rental. Plus, if your instructor introduces our book into your classroom, you will have access to the new digital platform VitalSource and all its features, as well as e-textbook rentals (with up-to 70% off the list price).
