The Image Collection Explorer  tool in Map Viewer allows you to select an individual image tile from a mosaic and then save that as a separate layer in ArcGIS Online. It is especially helpful in capturing ephemeral events that would make great teaching opportunities and resources.

This example is based around the concept of capturing some current volcanic activity as part of an Earth Science lesson/lecture, to help bring the subject alive and challenge the students to explain the processes that are captured in the up-to-date imagery.

Once you are signed into Map Viewer there are five easy steps to follow:

  1. Select the imagery layer you want to use, in this example it is the Sentinel 2 Views layer that is updated daily.
  2. Find the location you are interested in.
  3. Select the right image processing template that best shows the features you are interested in. In this example, it is Short Wave Infrared to make the recent eruptions clearly stand out.
  4. Use the Image Collection Explorer too to select the image and add it as a layer to the map.
  5. Save the image to your ArcGIS Online account.

It really is that easy!  Watch the video below to see the workflow and think about how you could use it in your teaching:

Once the image is saved as its own layer you can share it with students through a WebMap, in a StoryMap, explore it in 3D (see below) or even as part of a VR experience using the 360VR app.
