Antipodes are two locations that sit directly opposite each other on Earth. If you could draw a straight line from one location through the center of the planet, it would emerge at its antipode on the other side. Exploring antipodes gives students a simple, engaging way to think about Earth as a sphere (approximately) while strengthening their understanding of location, latitude and longitude, and global spatial relationships.

When teaching with antipodes, consider these quick possibilities for fun, engaging learning:
- Test the "dig to China" myth often uttered in the United States. Have students predict where a tunnel from their hometown would surface, then search for it and watch the right pane land in the southern Indian Ocean. The gap between guess and result is the lesson, and it opens the question of why so few places have a land antipode.
- Turn coordinates into arithmetic, then verify. Give students a list of cities and have them compute antipodes on paper first — flip the latitude sign, add or subtract 180 from the longitude. They type their answer into the lat/long boxes and check it against what the map shows. The app becomes a self-marking worksheet, and the ±180 wraparound is where the interesting mistakes happen.
- Sample points and build a dataset. Each student drags the left map to twenty random spots and tallies how many antipodes hit land versus water. Pool the class results and compare against the roughly 70/30 split. It's a real probability exercise, and it sets up the land hemisphere / water hemisphere concept — Earth's continents are clustered so lopsidedly that land-to-land pairs are rare.
- Use the depth scale for Earth's interior. The strip between the panes is drawn to scale: crust, mantle at 660 km, outer core at 2,890 km, inner core at 5,150 km, centre at 6,371 km. Ask students what a tunnel would actually pass through and what state that material is in — the outer core being liquid is usually the surprise.
- Compare mirrored climates and seasons. Antipodes sit at equal latitude in opposite hemispheres, so they're in opposite seasons and roughly 12 hours apart in time. Have students find a land-to-land pair — Spain and New Zealand is the classic — and compare climate data for the same calendar month.
