Hey Pipelines Team,

I haven't been able to find this in the documentation so I thought I'd ask it here.  Does editing need to be enabled in the service for Data Pipelines to work/write to the layer? I've had mine off and it seemed to still work, but wanted offical documentation on this.

Hi @Amanda__Huber ,

Thank you for reaching out!

No, it is never required to have editing enabled on the layer before updating it. Some more details on that:

  • If you are the owner of a feature layer, you have full update control even without editing enabled.
  • If you are an administrator, you also have full update control even without editing enabled on the layer you do not own.
  • If you are not an administrator, the only way to update a layer you do not own is if it is shared to a shared update group that you are a member of. Shared updated groups enable any member of the group to edit or update any item in the group.

I'll update our doc to clarify these requirements.

Please let me know if you have additional questions!

Thanks again,

Bethany
