Oracle Direct Connect Problem

I just installed ArcMap 9.3.1 on two new Windows XP computers and I can't get them to connect to our SDE database.  We use an Oracle 10 client direct connect set up to access our SDE database.  When we try to connect to the databases we get the following error: Failed to connect to database. Underlying DBMS error[Unknown errorNo extended error.] 

I set these computers up just like I've done for the rest of the team, and I've never seen this error before.  Does anyone have any helpful information?

I figured it out.  I had a bad environment variable.

Can you post more on this?  Which environment variavble was wrong?  I am having same problem with one computer and do not know which part is wrong.
