Hi all,

I'm using the Field Calculator with some basic Python syntax to recalculate a field. The new data is coming from a joined Excel worksheet. My expression is:

!'Commercial-Active$'.OLD![:-3]

When I run this I get the error: "A field name was not found or there were unbalanced quotation marks." I know the field name is correct because I'm selecting it as-is from the Fields box. Does anyone know what this is all about?

Thanks!

Well I think I figured it out... when I tried re-adding the Excel sheet, the Add Data dialog displayed it as Commercial-Active$' (that is, with a trailing quote mark). Removing the hyphen also got rid of the quote mark, and then everything played nicely.

Another mysterious ArcGIS workflow...
