Please find in the codegallery my first version of an advanced print solution:
http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=6809086326ea4c76bf026a32bb9dd698

The backend is developed in Java as a ServerObjectExtension: PChPrintSOE

The communication to the SOE is realized by the REST.
So, any client can be used Flex, Javascript, ...
I just created a simple FlexWidget.

Some features:
- full print over the rest api (usable by any client)
- export to pdf, jpeg, png, emf and mxd!
- view paper layout extent live on map
- make print on a "template" mapservice by keeping the predefined layout
- multi-mapservices/multi-server support
- add graphics on the map view positioned in map units
- add elements on the layout view positioned in paper units like scalebar, scaletext

The code is under full development:
- support for wms layer
- code clean up and reorganization

Any suggestions, remarques or help is welcome.

Live demo with public Esri mapservices (last print button):
http://gis.pch.etat.lu/flexViewerPrint/
   - use this print widget with your PChPrintSOE-enabled mapservices for high quality
   - draw first some graphics with the DrawWidget prior making your print (in mxd format)

UnkleJ,
you have to configure the virtual output directory on your "Printing" mapservice.

If you have configured it, could you please post the ArcGIS server log in verbose mode.

Tom

Hi Tom,

Our virtual output dir (in Server Manager) is configured to be the https: domain account, yet the resulting image is storing the server name (which also happens to be the name of the IIS server - also attached). See sample from logfile attached.

Any ideas?

Update: Please ignore this. We've been testing the virtual directories, and it appears that sometimes when resetting server directories in AGS Manager, it does NOT actually do what it says it does 🙂 All sorted now.

I'm having an issue where the red print extent box remains on the display after the widget is closed. Is there a fix for this with the compiled version? See the attached image.

Is anyone else having this issue of the red box being left behind after closing the widget? Also is anyone compiling this with 2.4 yet? I'm getting errors with the Layout Elements not loading.

conner_justin,
I hope to get some time this week to fix this bug and to make it fully 2.4 compatible.

That would be phenomenal! I was starting to wonder if I was the only one with the red box issue. And I'm sure I speak for everyone here that we really appreciate the work that you generous developers put in and then share with the crowd.

Hy,
to provide better support for the PChPrintSOE, I will move the complete sources and binaries to BitBucket.

Flex part:
  http://bitbucket.schuller.lu/tomlux/pchprintwidget
SOE-java part:
  http://bitbucket.schuller.lu/tomlux/pchprintsoe

I configured also an issue ticket system to manage the different requests.
It's very hard to maintain an overview of user requests/problems/remarks over the different forum posts.

So, if you have any request for code change or problems just create a ticket.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Thank you for your hard work on developing / maintaining this amazing utility for us all to use.

I have the latest version running on ArcGIS Server 10 sp2 without any issues.  I was however wondering if yourself or anyone else has had issues with the image inserts.  It seems as though my company logo becomes enlarged when added to the PDF, PNG, JPG files.  The image becomes enlarged by such a magnitude that it actually will cover the whole page and hide the map.  To reconcile the problem, I attempted to shrink the size of the logo way down.  This works to some extent, but the smaller image still enlarges and becomes quite pixelated...which does not look very appealing to the eye.

Any thoughts Tom or anyone else?  Thanks for your time.

sorry, new project links:

For any bugs, problems or questions, please use the bitbucket issues system.
Will help me to provide better support.

cvance15,
could you please open an issue on the bitbucket page. I also updated the sources/binaries. Could you try with the latest code and post the generated printurl.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Sorry I didn't see your earlier post to use bit bucket for issues!  I will try out the new .jar file this afternoon once I get this mountain of work in front of me out of the way.  Thanks for the quick replies.
