Can a sum of values be calculated from a field in a repeat?

I am building a survey with numerical data being entered in a repeat. 

Is there a way to display a running sum of a numerical field from the repeat? 

Ideally, the total would show outside of the repeat, but inside would be okay too.

This would be a useful feature - especially where there is validation for accuracy required prior to the form submission. As our field workers enter multiple records, they get an overall SUM that validated they have not entered the same value twice (for example). 

Another alternative would be to show the repeat entries row by row rather than only a horizontal scroll between them.
