Within Story Maps a popular option to introduce visual clarity is using a media action in order to filter a web map. You can do this by adding a media action text or button that can either be a new map or an edited view of a current web map. For example, one might start with a web map of the countries of the world and then use a media action to allow a user to potentially "filter" their view to let's say the United States. In this scenario the edit map view option of a media action would be chosen. However, I have noticed that if I were to enter alternative text for the original web map this alternative text is retained for all media actions that are associated with that set of map views.
Current Functionality:
World Map Alt Text: This is a map of the world.
Media Action for United States Alt Text: This is a map of the world. (autofills to this)
Scenario - you update the alternative text on the media action map to "This is a map of the United States.":
World Map Alt Text: This is a map of the United States.
Media Action for United States Alt text: This is a map of the United States.
Ideal Functionality:
World Map Alt Text: This is a map of the world.
Media Action for United States Alt Text: This is a map of the United States.
Carrying through with our example from above, the media action map that shows the United States should be able to have an alternative text that indicates it is a map of the United States, and the initial whole map media action that indicates it is a map of the countries of the world should be able to have a different set of alternative text. This update would allow for better clarity of what data is being shown where, and accessible data access for anyone who uses a screen reader, or in scenarios where maps are unable to be drawn due to connectivity issues.
