ArcGIS Pro 2.9 Map Series Export Crash

I had made a Layout with Map series pages in version 2.8.2 and now the project will no longer export the Map Series after updating to 2.9. Clicking Export on this layout with the map series causes ArcGIS Pro 2.9 to crash to the desktop. A different layout in this project exports just fine and doesn't contain a Map Series. I have played with the compression settings and tried exporting as something that isn't a PDF.

Is anybody else having this issue?

I would report it to ESRI Tech Support but the error reporting tool that pops up when Pro crashes is refusing to send the error report too.

Hi Garret,

You may be running into the same issue as reported at https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-pro-questions/arcgis-pro-2-9-0-crushes-when-i-try-to-import-a/m.... In this case the crash occurs if you try to export/print a layout containing a "null" or empty text element. Does your layout contain an "null/empty" text element?

If not, there may be another issue causing the crash. If this is the case can you contact Esri Support? They are better equipped to handle troubleshooting steps and gather bug data. They can be contacted at https://support.esri.com/en/contact-tech-support.

Thanks,

Tom

Thank you sir! That did it. It appears to be the same bug in a different context.

What exactly is meant by "null/empty" text element? I am experiencing the same issue and just want to be on the same side I am getting it correctly.

Hi Andrej,

An "empty" text element is considered to have a space but no characters - " ".  A "null" element will have no spaces or characters.

If you have no such elements in your layout and are still experiencing a crash please contact Esri support. They are better equipped to handle troubleshooting steps and gather bug data. They can be contacted at https://support.esri.com/en/contact-tech-support.

Hope this helps,

Hi Tom,

Could there be another reason ArcGIS Pro 2.9 is crashing when trying to export a layout?  I'm having this same issue in multiple projects, and none have empty/null text elements to remove.  Thanks.

Devon

Hi Devon,

Yes, there could be other reasons for the crash than having empty/null text elements. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any specific case other than the issue with text. Can you contact Esri Support? They are better equipped to handle troubleshooting steps and gather bug data. They can be contacted at https://support.esri.com/en/contact-tech-support.

As a work around you might try to export through python (ArPy.mp). Here is a link to a help topic with more info on exporting with ArcPy.mp. https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/arcpy/mapping/layout-class.htm#C_GUID-6DFB661B-D50A-4E3A-AE...

Hope this helps,

Tom

Thanks a tonn Tom! I was struggling with it for almost a day. And it took not more than a minute after looking at your input to do the required. Empty text caused an issue. Eliminating it resolved.

Thank you for your solution Andrej; I was having the same issue and it seems to be resolved now after deleting an empty text element.
