Custom basemap gallery slow to populate

I have created a custom basemap group for our organization which includes many of the ESRI standard basemaps along with a custom basemap that we have created.  When I set this group as the basemap group, it takes about 5 seconds for the basemap list to populate when you click Basemap in the AGOL Map viewer for the first time (vs a bit over a second for the ESRI Default Basemaps).  After it has been populated the first time in a session it behaves quickly on subsequent clicks. 

Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

There should be no difference between load times of the default vs custom basemap gallery. My guess is that the Esri basemap gallery has been cached in your browser, and thus, it always seemed fast. Try aggressively clearing your browser cache and see if the Esri basemap gallery loads with the same speed as you're seeing on the first load of your custom one.
