In this blog I’ll be sharing techniques for writing efficient applications for rending large numbers of graphics which are being updated very frequently on a map.

The ArcGIS Runtime API for Java is used to demonstrate these techniques, but if you are a developer using another ArcGIS Runtime platform such as .NET, iOS, Qt or Android then the same techniques still apply.

Maps are awesome. They convey information via an illustration that is hard to conceptualize with just words. In this blog post, I will show how to add some flair to rendering a map layer using a PictureFillSymbol.

This blog post will show how to use ArcGIS Pro to author a shapefile containing private information. Then using the ArcGIS Server Manager, we will add this shapefile to an existing ArcGIS Server published map service, but with the caveat that this new dynamic layer can only be accessed when certain key pieces of information are known to the developer or end user of the app. Finally, using the WPF framework in the C# programming language, we'll create an ArcGIS Runtime application to consume the dynamic data layer. This app will be able to modify the rendering of the dynamic data layer on the fly, and perform identify operations to look at underlying attribute information.

In this blog post, I will demonstrate how to use ArcGIS Pro to author and publish a map service on ArcGIS Server to create a dynamic map layer. Then we'll create an ArcGIS Runtime application using the WPF framework in the C# programming language to consume the dynamic map layer. This will let us do some  interesting things, like modify the rendering on the fly and perform identify operations to look at underlying attribute information.

Although we often associate field data collection activities with mobile phones, it is still very common for these data collection exercises to be carried out using laptop computers.  Being able to view your data on a larger screen with a more feature rich user interface is a common requirement for more complex use cases.
