LayerList widget 3.x customising

Hi all

Is it possible to customise the LayerList widget (using 3.x version of the js api) as shown in the graphic below? Ideally I would like to show the layer symbology to the right of the layer name instead of having to expand the layer list. If this is not possible, how can I show each layer expanded on startup e.g. middle section in graphic below? Am a relative new to javacript so any pointers gratefully received!
