Access certain fields/attributes in Feature_info from a custom feature layer

Hi

I'm thinking I need to make changes to the Feature_info Widget to allow it to programmatically access certain fields/attributes from a custom feature layer (constructed by someone else). If there are other ways to do this, I'm open to that also. Knowing multiple ways to do this would be a bonus.
