The summary statistic card is a great way to show key performance indicators on your Hub site, such as the current population of a city, the total miles of offroad bike paths added in a neighborhood, or a tally of volunteers engaging in tree planting events in the local park. These numbers change over time and summary statistic cards dynamically update, pulling the latest data from the underlying content.

A new manual option

But we’ve heard for a while that Hub site creators also want a way to manually enter a statistic. Perhaps this is a figure coming from an official report that doesn't have a dataset behind it. Or it is a historical number that will never change and doesn’t need to be dynamically updated.

The new summary statistic card on Hub sites now offers both! Today we are releasing an upgrade to the summary statistic card that allows you to choose up front between “Dynamic” and “Static”. The dynamic option is how the summary statistic card has worked until this point – you connect to a data source (feature service), select an attribute, and apply aggregations or filters to get to the number you want. The new static option lets you type a number in directly, now letting you show these static metrics in the same style as the dynamic ones.

Additional formatting options

Your data is important. And ensuring you can visualize it just the way you want is key. So, we’ve added a few additional fields to bring more detail and clarity to your summary statistics cards. These include a new subtitle field, which shows below the title, as well as a unit field (placed before, after, or below the value). We’ve restructured the configuration menus based on these new fields, so if you don’t see a field in one menu, just check out the others.

Sharing configuration

You’ll see some new sharing configuration options as well – the ability to enable sharing for individual summary statistic cards and show the share button persistently or upon hover. The summary statistic card now joins map, app, and iframe cards with their ability to be shared and linked to directly.

Things to keep in mind

We’ve made a few stylistic changes to the summary statistic card to make it more visually consistent with the other Hub layout cards. Behind the scenes, the summary statistic card is now a web component. This improved and more flexible architecture brings benefits such as the ability to share individual cards. The tradeoff is that the card can no longer be targeted with custom CSS, so we suggest you utilize the out of the box theming and styling options provided by Hub.

In our extensive testing of the new summary statistic card on customer sites, we found a few cards where the “Source” links no longer link to a dataset, potentially because the underlying dataset has changed. For these datasets, upon release, the cards will no longer show a “Source” link because Hub isn’t able to detect one. If this happens to one of your cards, simply re-create the card and link it to the intended dataset.

So, now you can take advantage of the refined form and function of the dynamic summary statistic card. And you have the additional flexibility to configure a card with the manual option. Don't forget about the sharing capability when you are creating and editing your summary statistic cards. Now go dig into your data and make those statistic cards shine!
