Selections on map fail to filter report visuals when the join field contains a single quote " ' " (UTF-8: 27)

I’ve noticed that in some cases, selections made on my map visual (join layer) don’t affect the surrounding visuals. After extensive trial and error, I discovered the issue: a single quote (UTF-8: 27) in the join fields.

Out of 196 features on the map, all filter other visuals correctly except for six, each containing a single quote. Interestingly, the filter works in the opposite direction: a selection made in a different visual does filter the map.

Thank you so much for your notes and for sharing this finding. Would you be able to please share more details -

  • Does this happen in both the Desktop and Online versions?

  • If you replace the single quote with a double quote (") or a space, does the filtering resume immediately?

  • What is the underlying Data Source?

Thank you so much.

Hi @KanikaKumar ,

To answer your questions:

  1. I can't (easily) test this anymore at this point, since the data has been changed as a workaround for the issue. However, it was definitely a problem in teh Desktop version (Power BI: 2.149.1429.0 64-bit and ArcGIS visual: 2025.3.950.0).
  2. I did not test it with a double quote, but all other special characters such as a space, "-", "é", "(" or ")" are not a problem at all. Simply removing the single quote in those six names made the join work again.
  3. The underlying datasources for this join layer are:
    1. For the Power BI data: data imported from an SQL server
    2. For the ArcGIS data: a hosted feature layer
