Issues with ArcGIS for Power BI join layer

We are running into some issues with the join layer. I’m currently on version 2024.2.500.0 and I can't seem to upgrade to a more recent version (not by installing the latest Power BI version manually from Microsoft.com or by downloading it through the Microsoft Store).

I have setup a join-layer and a filter to zoom in on different custom polygons. The issues I have are as follows:

  • The join layer does work for a bit, but stops working once I try to use the select tool or just stops.. after a while.
  • The select tool does not work at all.
  • When join layer is "working", the map sometimes does not react to a filter and the filter needs to be clicked once more to have an effect.
  • When going from one filter to another, often there is smooth transition, but other times it just jumps.

We are just starting to explore the option of working with Power BI (and the ArcGIS integration). However, the initial impression left us sligthly dissapointed. Fingers crossed this can be resolved.

Best regards,
Wouter

Hi @GIS-celVlaams-Brabant,

Thanks very much for your question and sorry for the late reply. I completely understand how important it is to get the integration right. We’re hopeful that with further exploration and support, any issues will be resolved, and we can make the most of ArcGIS for Power BI together.

First of all, I recommend updating to the latest version of Power BI to ensure optimal performance and stability. Once you are on the latest version of Power BI, you could use the latest version of ArcGIS for Power BI in Power BI. Right now, ArcGIS for Power BI is on version 2024.2.560. You could download latest Power BI Desktop (version: 2.140.1577.0 64-bit (February 2025)) through Microsoft store or use the Power BI service (app.powerbi.com) if you cannot download from Microsoft.

For the issues you mentioned, I would recommend trying the latest version of ArcGIS for Power BI and see if they are still reproducible. If the issues persist, please feel free to let me know the steps you followed to reproduce them and the dataset you used, so I can investigate further.

Thank you!

Hi @NaZhang_Esri !

Thank you, the weird thing is, I can't seem to upgrade to the latest version of the visual. As you can see on the screenshots attached, I seem to be on the latest version of Power BI, however the visual is still a previous version.

Any idea how to solve this issue?

Best,
Wouter

Hi @GIS-celVlaams-Brabant ,

Thanks for the screenshots and more details! Could you please add ArcGIS for Power BI from Visualizations pane in your report, go to Settings and let me know the version? I attach two screenshots here to help you find it.

Hi @NaZhang_Esri,

Thanks for the quick reply!

My visual is indeed the latest version. The version number shown under "about" (after right-clicking the visual icon) is not the same as the version number shown within the visual itself (under settings, as you illustrated).

This means that the issues described are still vallid.

Best,
Wouter

Hi @GIS-celVlaams-Brabant ,

Cool! That means we got the first issue resolved! Good work! Then could you please share the detailed steps for me to reproduce the issues you reported? Thanks!

Hi,

Thank you! Please find the steps below:

- I added a Feature layer with polygons (stored in our Portal for ArcGIS).
- Next, I created a join layer to link the polygons to other data in the dashboard.
- At this point, everything works as expected. Using a slicer to filter the polygons on the map works fine.

However, when trying to filter/select polygons on the map itself, nothing happens. I click on the "Selection tool" and have the join layer as "Active layer" (see screenshot). Next I click on the polygons or use the rectangle tool to select them, but no selection/filtering seems to happen.

After trying this, filtering with the slicer has stopped working until I go to a different report tab and back again. After swithing tabs, the slicer filters the map visual again.

Best regards,
Wouter

Hi @GIS-celVlaams-Brabant,

Apologies for the delayed response; I mistakenly thought I had replied earlier. I’m still unable to reproduce the issue following the steps provided. Please find the video attached for reference. Would you be able to share the data or report with me to assist further?
