We would love to be able to implement select multiple type questions in Field Maps. We currently have a use case where field staff need to select multiple types of waste found on a site and record contextual information for each one.

This is the current design in Survey123, but we would love to migrate this all into one single app instead of using Collector for visibility in the field, and Survey for collecting the data.

Has there been any movement on this from ESRI? We desperately need this function to record nature recovery activity in a national park.

Still very much in need of this feature!

  • Survey123 implements this as a comma delimited list of values stored in a string field. This can make it difficult to re-use in other areas of ArcGIS. For those of you who use Survey123:
    • We are trying to migrate a survey form from S123 over to FM. In previous years' data collection, the comma-delimited format worked fine for our purposes.
      • Do you show the layers in other apps/maps besides Survey123?
        • Only as pop-ups in AGOL.
      • Do you use hidden fields & calculations to split the choices into separate fields?
        • No
      • Do you use Arcade in Pop-ups and Dashboards to format the data?
        • No
    • How do you use the captured data for these fields?
      • They are contingent fields, where the preceding field is used for automated site scoring (combo box or switch), and the multiple selections provides details that specialists (biologists/hydrologists) can use later for a better understanding of the site.
  • Would you expect to be able to create a multiple choice element for existing fields?
    • No, we recreate the survey form every year, which allows us to keep data years separate and also implement tweaks to the forms (rephrase questions, reformat answers, etc).
    • If so, do those fields have existing coded value domains? Are they string fields or integer fields?
      • All values are strings.
  • Would it be beneficial to have a multiple choice UI/UX that stores each choice in a separate "boolean" field instead of a comma delimited list?
    • Comma-delimited would be preferable, but no strong preference.
  • How many choices per question are anticipated?
    • I agree with others that ~20 would be a reasonable limit (anticipating no more than ~10 for our own uses).
  • Would you need to add or remove choices over time?
    • Not anticipated, but would be nice to have the option.
    • If so, should that affect previously collected data?
      • No, I believe original data should remain untouched. Possibly add a workflow to coerce old (no longer selectable) values to new values? This may also be done manually during data processing after collection season is over. Automatic changes to original data based on changes to the question seems like ripe opportunity for folks to unknowingly delete data or edit it in unintended ways.
    • Would you need to deprecate choices over time?
      • Not anticipated.
  • Would you need to edit an existing choice name/values?
    • Not anticipated
    • If so, should that affect previously collected data?
      • I'm personally of the belief that original data should remain untouched unless intentionally coerced; i.e., it would be nice to have the option to either keep or coerce original values, even if the specific string is no longer available in new list.
  • Do the choices needs any additional information displayed with them, like a description? Or is the value/name enough?
    • Value/name is probably sufficient. Ability to add a description may make the survey too wordy anyway and hurt UX (unless limited to a small character limit of ~50).
    • If so, can you provide a specific example?

Another Field Maps user here asking to update Filed Maps with the functionality of having multiple selection. This is urgently needed.

I'd like to add name to the list of people who want this feature. My colleagues need to select multiple invasive species they are treating as well as select multiple field workers doing the treatments.

Adding another vote for this being useful for invasive management!
