Add a Tracing Tool When Creating Lines and Polygons in ArcGIS Field Maps

I am a geologist who frequently maps adjacent geological units in the field using ArcGIS Field Maps.

Many mapping workflows require new polygons or lines to share boundaries with existing features. Because Field Maps currently does not provide a tracing tool during feature creation, these shared boundaries must be redrawn manually. This often introduces small gaps or overlaps that later need to be corrected in ArcGIS Pro.

I would like the ability to trace existing line or polygon edges while creating new features, similar to editing workflows available in ArcGIS Pro.

This would:

  • Produce cleaner and more accurate datasets directly in the field.
  • Eliminate gaps and overlaps between neighbouring polygons.
  • Reduce post-processing time in ArcGIS Pro.
  • Improve efficiency during geological mapping.

Although this request comes from a geological mapping perspective, it would also benefit land-use mapping, environmental surveys, forestry, utilities, agriculture, and any workflow involving adjacent features.

I agree. This would be extremely useful for habitat and aquatic features mapping (as would be the ability to split a polygon; please see this ideathis idea and this idea).
