Remove prepopulated -All- default selection in filter widget

I have configured a filter widget to populate a list. However, I do not want the list to show records until the filter has been populated with a user selection. Currently, the filter widget defaults to -All- so all records in the feature layer appear in the list. I only want records to appear AFTER the filters are selected. How would I go about setting this up?
