Perfect! Great solution. I will test this before my users go into the field but it looks easy and solid. Thanks!

James, Any luck documenting this process? I would like to give it a try, simulate a device failure and recovery. Our firm is based and works in Alaska and many of our crews are off-grid for days or weeks at a time. Knowing that our data are safe is a primary concern before we adopt a new workflow. Thanks Will Lentz ABR, Inc.

Ceasar, Sorry I didn't see this post sooner. For the price, this looks like a great Windows OS device. This year I paid more like £300 for a rugged tablet. Did you end up getting a CL900 and if so, how is its performance? We have started using Android tablets in the field. Much better price point but no ESRI solution to take data offline yet. They expect to have that available in the next 6 months or so, it would be exciting to see. To replace entering data on paper forms we bought Pantech Element tablets - waterproof but not rugged and very reasonable at about half the price of the CL900. We put them in a nice folio case and asked our users to take care of them. So far, so good. Hoping to do some mapping on them next season. Will Fairbanks AK

Panasnic is developing a 10" ruggedized tablet with Android. I think that is our best bet at getting some modern hardware on a mobile device. ESRI just released ArcGIS for Android a month ago, it will be nice to see if it all comes together for next field season.

Subtle note is that the red box disappears after you release the ctrl key so hold it. If you forget, press the ctrl key again and the box pops up again - OK that is handy. Selecting multiple controls ?!?! sure would be nice 🙂 Will

I have not tried this in v10 but in previous versions I accomplished this by making a text field with a default value of [now()] It records the complete date/time. When I get the data into Access I change the field type to a datetime and it works just fine. ArcGIS 9x still ate the time off my datetime fields but ArcGIS 10 is supposed to be completely time aware so I don't know how it will work. I would try to capture data in a text field and when I bring it back into the desktop geodatabase make a new field and populate it from the txt. Setting the default to now() is nice and simple, no coding. Will

Is there a "clear all fields" command that can be added to a button? Haven't looked at it but it is a good idea.

The most effective way to do this is with a program called GPS TrackMaker. Nice and simple to use. Free version gets you GIS to GPS but you have to buy the Pro version to go GPS to ArcView. Some very nice tools inside even the free version like "find duplicate tracks". It will also concatenate GIS files and automatically make the track names unique.
