Right, I actually had that concern at the beginning, so I disabled editing on the feature services from ArcGIS Server. We have actually fired up a separate server instance just for CAD to keep everything isolated and to get around limitations of SAML with our Portal environment. We're also exploring utilizing spatial views from SQL server as that is our actual back-end and it's fairly easy to enable SQL access from ArcGIS.

If you are upgrading, you do not want to join an existing portal, you want to create a new portal. Joining an existing portal is for High Availability.

I think the ideal tool would be, at least for us, for our users to be able to use a tool similar to the select by features tool already in the application, but apply it as a filter. This would allow them to customize what data they want to actually show from a layer. For an example, a CAD user is working on a sketch for a drilling pad to submit to a regulatory agency and only wants to show certain wells that are being served out as part of a master layer of all wells. This is just one simple instance.

I should have clarified, yes, indeed we want to be able to filter a feature service, by attribute.. Most common use case - controlling what is in the map. As it stands now, controlling what is and is not shown will have to be done on the server side. This is not an ideal situation. REST supports attribute filtering though, so I imagine it would not be that difficult to implement on the client side?

We're exploring implementing the addon for our CAD users, and one thing they are asking for is the ability to filter an incoming Feature/Map service. is there a way to do this from the UI?

Make sure you're using the initial administrator account, not one through your company security if you're using ADFS/SAML/WA.

Thank goodness, performance of views has been... less than great... since we lost command line functionality.

Is your ArcGIS Online account log in different from your University one? If not, click the top option, not the bottom one and see if that works!!

Tom, the datastore can be implemented with backups fairly easy, don't let a little command line scare you! This is a great place to start: Manage data store backups—Portal for ArcGIS (10.4.1) | ArcGIS for Server You can basically specify an off-location directory within your company network, set a schedule and it's pretty much a set it and forget it. We also have VM, so not only are the databases saved to an off-site location, but we also save images of our hosting server nightly.

That's completely possible, and I've done it in disconnected environments with much success. This model can also be implemented with Feature Services pointing to SDE. The end users are able to check out and check in a copy of the data for editing locally.

I think you're on the right path overall, but I'd really simplify things greatly. I would just have one version off of default, called working, and a version off of working for each editor, point your reviewers to the working version, and any readers/web apps to default. Then institute some kind of regular schedule for reconciling and posting between the versions. IE... Editors post nightly to the working version, and the working version be set to post at a set interval (weekends) to default. You're also going to want to consider historical versioning over this more traditional versioning workflow. The place I work at currently, and oversee the SDE environment, we decided it was easier to implement time based historical versioning and just ensuring everything is setup as Registered as Versioned. This means that everything is stored historically, and can be rolled back to any point in time since implementation.

When I set my Portal URLs for the app, I get a blank map when I load the app in a browser. Also, I would expect a place to set my portal URL, app secret and app ID to register with Oauth. Are my assumptions wrong there?
