Many tools, like Union, state that the Basic and Standard licenses provide "Limited" use. How are the use of these tools limited with these licenses?

I am having the same issue (arcgis desktop - Error with da.UpdateCursor and SDE feature classes - Geographic Information Systems Stack Exchange). Was this ever resolved on your end? I am using 10.1 in an oracle database.

Thanks for the reply. This is perhaps a start, but your method of using quadrants I think assumes there are four agents each time. In fact, there may be 2, or 3, or 10, etc.

I would not consider my answer a guess (despite my wording), since Chris indicated he was working with shapefiles, and the error returned does not include the '.shp' extension in the feature class full path.

This is true. However, it does not appear that Chris is using the list generated by his ListFeatureClasses list for his process that fails. Instead he is perhaps using the result of clips, dissolves, and other geoprocessing. Regardless, his error lists the feature class full path without the ".shp" extensions.

I have a polygon feature class that represents work areas in a given region. My task is to divide the work up evenly between n number of agents. The groups of polygon features should be grouped close together, and there should be similar counts per group. So, for example, if i have a feature class with 80 polygons, and I have 4 agents, I'd need an end result of 4 groups of 20 polygons, with each group spatially close together. I've developed a script that uses near analysis among other techniques to test various combinations of polygons. I first find all possible OID combs with itertools.combinations, and from there start testing each combo. It's fairly random at this point and takes a very long time. I have incorporated only using combos with the min and max X and Y features, and developed a bit of a way to 'hunt' in areas that are close to right, but still things are slow. Currently it's just easier to do it by hand, but I'd like it to be automated and work in a manageable amount of time. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would guess that since they are shapefiles you just need to add ".shp" to then end of your full path string.

It's actually an issue with select by attribute. You can try it yourself with this shapefile: http://scec.usc.edu/internships/useit/content/california-counties-shapefiles Then you can run my script with a few slight modifications (feature name, field name), and the results will be the same as what I found. Or you can type in these two commands into the Python command line in arcmap and compare the results: Succeeds: arcpy.SelectLayerByAttribute_management("CaliforniaCounty", "NEW_SELECTION", '"Name" LIKE \'%a%\' OR "Name" LIKE \'%A%\'') Fails: arcpy.SelectLayerByAttribute_management("CaliforniaCounty", "NEW_SELECTION", '"Name" LIKE \'%i%\' OR "Name" LIKE \'%I%\'')

I have writen a quick code just to improve my arcpy. The code uses a list of letters and then zooms around a California counties layer based on if their name contains each letter. However, it fails with 'i', 'v', and 'n'. 'W' and 'x' are the only letters it should bounce back. I am not sure why it does not detect a selection with 'i', 'v', and 'n'. The code is run in ArcMap through a toolbox. The code: import arcpy
import time
mxd = arcpy.mapping.MapDocument("CURRENT")
df = arcpy.mapping.ListDataFrames(mxd)[0]
for lyr in arcpy.mapping.ListLayers(mxd,"",df):
if lyr.name == "state_county_2010":
countylyr = lyr
Alphabet = ['q','w','e','r','t','y','u','i','o','p','a','s','d','f','g','h','j','k','l','z','x','c','v','b','n','m']
subset = ['e', 'r', 'i', 'o', 'a', 's', 'f', 'h', 'l', 'x', 'n', 'm']
for letter in Alphabet:
arcpy.SelectLayerByAttribute_management(countylyr, "NEW_SELECTION", '"NAME10" LIKE \'%' + letter + '%\' OR "NAME10" LIKE \'%' + letter.upper() + "%'")
if arcpy.Describe(countylyr).FIDSet:
df.zoomToSelectedFeatures ()
arcpy.AddMessage(letter)
time.sleep(6)
else:
if letter in subset:
arcpy.AddMessage("No counties contain an " + letter + "!")
else:
arcpy.AddMessage("No counties contain a " + letter + "!") The output: q No counties contain a w! e r t y u No counties contain an i! o p a s d f g h j k l z No counties contain an x! c No counties contain a v! b No counties contain an n! m Any ideas? Thx

Greetings, I would like to code a near analysis that generates the distance from each point in a point feature to its nearest neighbor within the same feature. Near Analysis and the like all require an Input feature and a different Near feature. Is there a way to get distance between nearest points in the same feature? If there isn't I'll have to select each point one at a time in the input feature, export selection to a new feature, switch selection on the input feature so that the exported point is ignored, and perform the near analysis with each created feature point. Then bring that data from each exported feature point back into the input feature, as far as I can tell. This would take big chunks of time on large point features.

I'm working with a line feature representing a pipeline. There are breaks in the line with no feature. I would like to fill in those breaks with lines. Currently I'm basically drawing lines with end points and deleting anything over a certain length, but it's not perfect. Sometimes the gaps are larger, for example. Is there a tool that does this for me by chance? It would essentially select feature end points that are closest to one another and create line features from them. It would also ignore the first start and last end point. Thanks! #create end points from merged pipeline
arcpy.FeatureVerticesToPoints_management (thePipeLine, "PipeLineEndPoints", "BOTH_ENDS")
#create lines from end points
arcpy.PointsToLine_management ("PipeLineEndPoints", "EndPointLns", Close_Line = "CLOSE")
#split line at verticies
arcpy.SplitLine_management ("EndPointLns", str(Geodatabase)+"\\SplitEndLines")
#Create layer from end point lines
arcpy.MakeFeatureLayer_management (str(Geodatabase)+"\\SplitEndLines","EndPointLineslyr")
#Select long lines >20 meters
arcpy.SelectLayerByAttribute_management ("EndPointLineslyr", "NEW_SELECTION", '"Shape_Length" >20')
#Delete long lines >20 meters
arcpy.DeleteFeatures_management ("EndPointLineslyr")
#Merge pipeline with gap lines
arcpy.Merge_management ([thePipeLine,str(Geodatabase)+"\\SplitEndLines"], "ConnectedPipe")

It looks like the issue is with the script. I tried the example script (zoom to selection) and it worked fine. Is there ever a case where scripts need to be altered to function as a button? My script has no parameters if that matters... EDIT: Scripting error, problem soloved 🙂

Ah okay. Initially my button wasn't showing up so I ran the script in IDLE, got the error, and assumed that was the issue. Now I've done the double-click run and followed the rest of the steps. This time the button is there but it doesn't do anything. I will keep poking away and hopefully get it working. Thanks for the response.
