Well, I may try that in the future too. I remember, thata I had some problems using some basic tools like aspect, hillshade etc., and I found, that the problem was caused by folders named with diacritics. However, this isn't the case. Anyway I have also heard, other student versions of different software packages can work with troubles, ie Autocad.

Well, actually no. Every "lake" (polygon) is separate.

Hello Xander, thank you for your suggestion. I don't understand much about the buffer solution, but I will take a note about it, and when possible, try to implement it into my problem. The thesis I was working on in January, did't include this statistics in the end.

Hello Tammie, actually I still don't know what's causing the problem. I should either do simple things without any tools or it may be caused by the fatc, that I use a student version of Arcmap.

Hello, I have tried to use several tools like kriging, reclassify and probably some others. My problem is, that I get an error popup saying that there is some invalid pointer or something, row 51,...and some other things I have no idead what they mean. I'll add a picture of it, and although it's in Czech language, structure of the text shouldn't change across languages. Now it asks me if I want to run the script and if I click no, error message and the tool window will close and if I click yes, the tool window will stay, but it will have clear background. Any idea what is wrong? Is my instalation corrupted? The other question is this: I have a set of points, trees in particular, and I have used near tool to calculate it's distance from lines, hoping, it would calculate only perpendicular distances, no angles. Am I wrong here? Should I use different tool or it can't be done in arcmap? Now when I symbolised the layer with unique values from the near_dist field, I get tens of values. I wouldn't be bothered but I would rather work with smaller set of values. Is there a way to do pretty much the same like reclassify with raster data? Thanks Lukas

Hello Melita, I don't know about other countries, but Krovak system actualy works in third quadrant and both axis are negative and moreover y axis is in the position of the usual x axis and vice versa. Anyway, I tried to create a point .shp out of coords with inverted x and y coords and, wait for it, it worked. So, thanks for the tip and thank you all who contributed to the overall success. It just took me 3 and a half year to get i right.............not bad And here's a proof that it actually works.

Hi Owen, thank you for your reply. I made a video (do not go over 6:52 haha) of doing what you're advising me to do. Yes, the point shapefile didn't have crs defined, so I defined it, then tryed to reproject to another one. Still the layers are not matching up. Well, clearly I do an obvious mistake, well not obvious to me though. http://leteckaposta.cz/645956574

Ok, so I tried the spatial adjustment you've been advising me to use. I would say it helped. Thanks, I think that solved my problem and I feel ashamed for not realising to put my measured gps data straight into Arcmap via csv or something. Anyway I came across a problem of mine, I was having ever since I tried to use any gis software. Yes I sometimes think I should stop using gis when I can't resolve this, but it kept me occupied when using freeware Qgis and as well now in Arcmap. I searched through the internet, and there is so much and yet so little about the problem, that I am on the edge of freaking out. I am sorry, but if may ask for another help, it would make my life easier, otherwise I am done. The problem: I come from Czech Rep where it is mandatory to use S-JTSK east north projected crs instead of WGS84 which makes everything squashed. But there was alway a problem for me to add a gps data, that use WGS84 crs, into a gis software and reproject it either on the fly or by any tool to the S-JTSK (EPSG 5514, former ESRI 102067) so that a point shapefile and an aerial imagery match up. I tried it several ways today and none was successful. I tried projecting it on the fly. I tried to use a data management project tool, I also read somewhere that Arcmap behave in a way, that the first layer with crs added become a parent - and software makes following layers added later reproject on the fly to the parent one. I tried that. Nope. I also tried to use this method ArcGIS Coordinate Transformation - YouTube, as I was quite conviced S-JTSK and whatever crs the author of the video was using, behave in a similar manner. Well it didn't went well either. Now I have a standalone small programe to convert WGS84 coords to S-JTSK one by one (so it is a fiddly job, although my gps contain only 3 points in total ) but I cannot use it in csv as Arcmap doesn't accept such data (it's not decimal but in meters). I hope I didn't get you bored. And if I didn't thanked for the help with the previous problem till yet, I thank you now. And if I did, another prasie doesn't hurt anybody.

Oh, well it's probably to late because that didn't occured to me I'll extract those point out of gps unit and put them into Arcmap. I will keep you posted either to bother you all even more or to celebrate the success.

Hello Owen, that clears a bit of my frustration. I thought there is something totaly wrong with the shapefile, though I can't fix it. The software I used to collect data allowed me to only export database but not the shapefile. I had to only copy the whole project that serves it purpose in Arcmap, somehow. But still I have to add the measured coordinates to those two points. So I try again to join the attr table and the database and will see what happens. Otherwise I dump it all and never care anymore

Hello Dan, actually I collected the data with "fieldmap" containing only laser and compass but no gps unit. But as I heard that I possibly could "georeference" the points, I brought to the field my own gps. Yes, it gives the point WGS84 coords and I live in central Europe where a different CS is used (S-JTSK_Krovak_East_North). I tried to set the data frames' cs to WGS84 and recalculate alt and long for my point but it still don't match. Not to mention that I didn't get to doing anything with those two measured coords N 49°34'263"....

Hello Anthony, thanks for your advice. I am no expert but from brief examining the spatial adjustment it seems, that I have to have some coordinate specific data to adjust anything, which I don't have. That is the problem. The set of points were not recorded in any coordinate system, they are only related to each other with x and y values (or z). And my question is, is there any way to give the the point the coords thus give whole bunch of point a coord system. But thank you anyway.

Well, that fast reply I didn't even hoped for. To be honest I am not clever of either one of your advices. Though I have today watched a video on youtube about addin lat and lon fields into an attribute table. However I don't quite ge it. How does the program creates the values of lat an lon when there is only a graphical expression of the data but no coordinates - when I open an attribute of one of those layers, it does not contain any x and y values whatsoever. That is beyond my understanding - how is the data stored in the shapefiel when there is no relationship stored in the attribute table...(probably another story) and if you ask if I do have the data for all the points, yes I do. I just don't understand how it can split without corrupting the shapefile. Now, I tried to calculate the x and y coords for my layer with set coord system for data frame as shown below but the point should, in my opinion, show in the red circle in the second image. To make everything clear I tried to join two attribute tables - the one of a shapefile and the other containing data for the points (exported database). However with no happy end except the join itself.

Hello, as it may seem obvious to many, I did not find anything aiming me to the right direction. At least google and Argis help failed (or I did). Anyway the problem is: I have a group of points (point shapefile) that I collected in the field. They all has position relationship though they don't contain information about their global coordinates (I didn't have gps unit for that task). However I have cerated 2 points which I also measured their actual coordinates via my personal gps unit. Now I heard it is possible to give the whole project a coordinate system on the basis of several measured coordinates. Ok, maybe 2 coords are not enough, but I can't find any tool to do it anyway. Now I don't think it would help to add images but to give a general infromation this is (one of) the group of points there are coords (in the 2 lines from above). I know the whole post doesn't make much sense but still, if anyone has a clue how to proceed, I'd be grateful.

So I think I have found a solution, although I don't understand why that happens. First I thought it's caused by the size of a shapefile that contains numerous polygons etc., but that didn't correspond with my case as there were, what, 30 polys in total... So, the solution is to jump into attributes tab (normally closed on the right bar), select the polygon (line or a point), right click and select "open table showing selection". That actually refresh the extisting attribute table you have opened and voila, it's there, whaiting to be edited.
