The documentation states that it only works with hosted feature services though. Maybe the documentation is out of date now?

This functionality is available in Server at 10.3.1 using parameter returnExtentOnly=true so hopefully it will make it into version 3.14 of the javascript api?

As an update to my update, I am seeing a slight issue with using pagination at 10.3.1. The original test I ran was using outFields=*, which works. As soon as I specified which fields I wanted to get back, the pagination stopped working. I did find that if I added in the ObjectID field as one of the outFields that it started working again so for now, as far as I can tell, if you want to limit which fields are returned when using resultOffset and resultRecordCount parameters for pagination, make sure to add the ObjectID field. I have a support ticket in to Esri about this.

At 10.3.1 I'm able to add the parameter returnExtentOnly to a REST service call and it only returns the extent. Here is an example: http://api.imb.org/arcgis/rest/services/LIVE/Urban/MapServer/0/query?where=GENC1%3D%27US-CA%27&returnExtentOnly=true&f=p… I'm not sure if this works for every kind of underlying database, but this service is based on a file geodatabase. Hopefully that helps!

Just as an update, I was able to use pagination with a fGDB at 10.3.1.

From what I was told by Esri support, SQL Server 2012 supports pagination, but 2008 does not. I don't know the technical reason behind the difference in support for the two versions.

In case others are curious, Esri Support responded that the underlying database determines whether pagination is supported. There isn't an advanced configuration setting that can be "enabled" to allow pagination. FileGDB is not supported at 10.3 but could be supported at a later release. Certain versions of enterprise geodatabases support pagination at 10.3.

I asked essentially the same question in this post: Will future version of Javascript API support non-hosted feature services for QueryTask.executeForExtent and/or FeatureL… I mention in the thread that an Esri developer mentioned the functionality should be in the REST API and in JSAPI at 10.3.1. At the 10.3 release though, there seems to be a hint that maybe this functionality is ready (at least for feature services)? ArcGIS REST API Look at the returnExtentOnly parameter that says it is new at 10.3. I'm not sure how you get the supportsReturningQueryExtent parameter to be true though. Hopefully that helps!

I upgraded a service from 10.2.2 and can't find a way to get pagination working. I find documentation about using resultOffset and resultRecordCount if "Supports Pagination" is true, but nothing about how to set it to true.

Richie Carmichael We utilize ArcGIS Diagrammer to maintain all of our GDB designs. After upgrading to 10.3, we can't open ArcGIS Diagrammer. An update supporting 10.3 would be greatly appreciated!

I asked this question at UC and at the Esri DC open house. A developer at the later event wrote me an email afterwards stating that the functionality needed in ArcGIS Server to support this would be available in 10.3.1. I would assume the javascript api would be updated after that release to support ExecuteForExtent. Hope that helps!

I am running into this performance problem also and would appreciate a queryForExtent method on the REST api for Dynamic Map Service Layers. I have some fairly large polygons and even when I use MaxAllowableOffset at a very high number, I still get back a lot more features filled with vertices than if I could just get an extent returned. Any chance of being in 10.3? Would a geoprocessing service that took a layer and query and returned an extent be faster (I assume it would be less bandwidth) than returning the features to the client and having to post-process them to get an extent?

I currently use ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer in a map with multiple layers of the same data symbolized differently based on scale. I use layerDefinitions to set all the definition queries as a user filters the map. The performance problem comes when trying to zoom to the selection with polygons since I have to use a queryTask, get the geometries back, and get the extent. This is done on data published from our own ArcGIS Servers. It would be very nice to use the QueryTask.ExecuteForExtent method so I don't have to get back all the features and their geometries, but this is only available to hosted feature services at 3.9. Is there a technical challenge that makes it not possible to implement for non-hosted services?

I agree that driving directions would be useful. Although we could use the same scenario as described above, we also have the use case where the route is planned ahead of time using ArcGIS Online on their computer where they can filter sites for certain criteria and then plan a trip and get directions within AGOL. When they save the directions as a layer in that map and open it in Explorer, the route is visible, but the directions are difficult to find (have to click parts of the route and read pop-up for next instruction). It would be nice to see the instructions in a pane on the left. The app is great overall!

Thanks for the reply Brent! I do agree that the app handling the issue by prompting the user whether to trust the CA is a much more user-friendly approach as users get new devices all the time. You may have helped them set everything up the first time, but with the new device, they forget the step of manually adding the CA and assume everything is broken. Just as an FYI, I have this same problem with Operations Dashboard for Browser. It would be nice to not have to worry users with extra setup steps with Ops Dashboard also. Explorer seems like a great app...keep up the good work!
