With Custom Roads, you can add and modify attributes and restrictions to the network. However, you should be aware of the following: --You should be knowledgeable about how to use the ArcGIS Pro Network Extension and have a good understanding of how a network works. --Modifying the network is possible, but it is not documented. Tech support may not be able to help if you run into problems. You may make the network inoperable. --You are responsible for making any updates to the network when a new version of Custom Roads is released.

Esri is focusing its development efforts on services that are accessible through ArcGIS Online, including the new World Geocoding and World Routing service offerings. These services are more up to date and offer more features and worldwide coverage. The World Geocoding service allows single line and multi line address input and places and other points of interest worldwide from the same endpoint. The reference data is more recent, and many of the locators have been extensively overhauled for better results. The World Routing service is also worldwide in scope. One of the major new features is that both current and historical traffic can be used in the route calculations. Other network services are also available including drive time and closest facility. Because there are new offerings, the older, legacy geocoding and routing services are on the road to retirement. A note about geocoding: whether using the new or legacy geocoding services, there are two general use cases: Geosearch Services: "Geosearch" is about locating a feature or point of interest and then having the map zoom to that location. The result might be displayed on the map, but the result is not stored in any way for later use. Requests of this type require no ArcGIS Online subscription. Geocoding Services: The primary purpose of these services is to convert an address to an x,y coordinate and append the result to an existing record in a database. The results are stored for later use. Mapping is not always involved, but placing the results on a map may be part of a workflow. Batch geocoding falls into this category. Requests of this type have always required a subscription. Before there were ArcGIS Online subscriptions, users should have purchased a World Geocoding subscription. In the past, some users have inadvertently misused the batch geocoding service by exceeding the limit of 1,000 addresses/geocodes per year. This use exceeded the terms of use as documented in the license agreement. More details about connecting to and using the new ArcGIS Online services can be found in the Resource Center. This is a good time to remind everyone that you are violating the terms of use if you do any batch geocoding (storing results) without a subscription. http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2013/02/21/terms-of-use-for-batch-geocoding/ Once you have a subscription, here is the information for connecting to the service for batch geocoding. If you still have problems connecting, please contact technical support.

ArcGIS for Desktop can access any of the online geocoding services for searching. It has always been against the terms of use to do batch geocoding without a subscription, and when you install a new version of ArcGIS you accept these terms of use. Thank you for pointing out the ambiguity of the functionality matrix. We'll get this updated to make it more clear that batch geocoding requires a subscription. For an inexpensive option, there's a locator available for North America in the Data & Maps collection that you can use with ArcGIS for Desktop. This may meet your needs at no additional cost.

If you wish to do batch geocoding, you should be using an ArcGIS Online for Organizations subscription. As a reminder, it's against the terms of use to do batch geocoding unless you have a subscription. If all you are doing is a search, no subscription is required. The following blog post provides a summary of the terms of use: http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2013/02/21/terms-of-use-for-batch-geocoding/. For more information about a subscripton, see http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline.

Currently, you can only geocode using the first half of the postal code. In the December release of ArcGIS Online, you'll find that you will be able to geocode the entire postal code in the UK.

A World Imagery service is hosted online for use in ArcGIS clients. This service requires no subscription. At this time, we don't have any subscription services with more resolution, although we do plan a big expansion of the World Imagery service with new imagery. There is some basic metadata for the service, and you can see this metadata in the following app: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisonline/content/index.html#/Content_Viewer/011q0000001z000000/. You can click on the map in a given location, and you'll see the vintage and vendor.

For information on the life cycle of ArcGIS Online services, a life cycle document is available. This document lists which services are in general availability, extended support, mature support, and retired. At the end of 2010 we'll be retiring some Map Services, but the more popular Street Map and Imagery services in WGS84 will remain available. You should be aware that while these services will remain available, they are no longer updated. They were last updated in June 2009. The life cycle document and the ArcGIS Online blog are both good places to get the latest information on the status of a service.
