I opened the Infographic sent by Joseph Kerski today. The data is of all counties. It shows number of confirmed COVID-19 confirmed cases, number of hospitals, demographics of the county, number of hospital beds, etc. It was amazing. Then, back on the range... In listening to the problems regarding lack of medical equipment, lack of information regarding where medical equipment is stored and how much medical equipment is stored at the different sites, it begged the question, “Why isn’t GIS being used? Or is it?” If not, and if the Federal government isn’t interested, I am sure Governors Newsom, Inslee and Cuomo would be interested. There is such a lack of national connectivity of geographic information. I know Jack Dangermond’s work reaches far and wide. I think Esri is needed desperately. I think of this often when I listen to the briefings and to the agonizing stories of health care workers being vulnerable because of lack of personal protective equipment. Has anyone else had these thoughts? Stay safe fellow human beings.

Marisa, I don’t know. Should they have? If so, how would they allow such access? How do students share to the group? Their maps are in the Organization. Do you create Folders for students to place their work? Or Groups? Thank you! Della

My students are working on a StoryMap. Two students created their own "Group" within the Group I had set up. They were able to collaborate within their Group, but couldn't upload their StoryMap to the Group I set up. Does anyone have a suggestion as how to proceed. Thank you.

When I am ready to invite students to the Organization, it is usually during the second semester. During semester 1, students learn ArcGIS Online fundamentals through "Undercover Mappers" and some lessons that I have designed. They also work on some Geoinquiries. When I am ready to invite students into the Org, I take a deep breath, look for the document to help me set up the file for inviting students without an email. It has worked well for me. Here are a few concerns: 1. Maintaining anonymity of students...does the UN and PW of a student make their name public. In the spreadsheet, under "FN" and "LN", I place the first letter of their name and their last name. 2. Deleting former students... when I attempted to delete a member this appeared: 3. I am waiting on our district IT team to make a decision about applying SSO. I made the request before Christmas. I will ask again. Questions: 1. Is it possible to change the student credentials: FN, LN, UN, PW? 2. Is there a video which goes through the process of inviting students and shows some of the tools available to the Administrator? 3. Last year, I had to give students "Publisher" role, in order for them to be able to use some tools. This year I gave them all "Publisher" role. Positive: To prepare students for the StoryMap project, I shared with them the winners of the 2018 "My California" StoryMap. I assigned different groups one of the winning maps. There were 2 groups that had the same StoryMap to read. They wrote down the merits and demerits of what they read and saw, then they shared their analysis with their team mates. The conversation was at a high level of analysis. They looked at content, at data display, at the style, mechanics of the StoryMap. That exercise gave them a standard to use to create their own StoryMap. Overall, students are energized by using ArcGIS Online to learn and to create an expression of what they have learned.

In my class, I am required to teach a CHYA curriculum for 2 weeks. Prior to this I started students on creating a StoryMap for the CalGeography StoryMap competition. I begin class by asking students if they are having difficulties, then I pick up with the CHYA curriculum. One student said that she created a subgroup for her and her partner. They were able to collaborate in that subgroup, but then couldn't upload their map to the Group that I set up. I am going to ask members of ArcGIS Online Geonet for some help in understanding this problem.

Yes, I have students do a StoryMap once during the year. I am sure that I do not exercise the power within the Organization because I am unaware of the possibilities.

Charlie, would you explain what you mean by "activity documentation" device. When will Kathryn be doing this? Thank you.

Thank you, Charlie. I will walk my students through the operation you described above. I just created a group for that class in AGOO. I will let you know how things go. PS I have introduced my students to StoryMaps and started them thinking about a StoryMap. They have read the 3 Middle School StoryMap Winners from last year's CalGeography StoryMap competition. They did some analysis of the StoryMaps, so they would learn how to make a good map, in terms of content, scope, template selection, cartography, etc. They will be using iPADs. I may be posting another question, if we run into any barriers. It has been wet out here in southern California. We welcome the rain, but hope people in the burn scar areas aren't hit by mudslides. I hope you and yours are warm and well.

Is there a way to upload data from an iPAD into a GIS map? My students use Google sheets. I don't know of any conversion from google sheets to a csv file. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Hello, all. I promised Charlie I would post my idea/question to Geonet. This was a couple of months ago. When I received the email about staying current in using geonet to avoid being "deactivated", I thought I better begin now and come back to it later. California has adopted NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). Our district adopted the middle school integrated model which is divided into 4 Instructional Segments (IS) at each of the three grade levels: 6, 7 and 8. The fourth Instructional Segment (IS 4) in all three grade levels is focused on the environment: Grade 6 : IS 4 “Human Activities can change the amount of global warming, which impacts plants and animals” https://www.californiaeei.org/curriculum/unit?unitid=66 EEI Curriculum and resources for “The Greenhouse Effect on Natural Systems” Grade 7: IS 4 “Human Activities Help Sustain Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing World” https://www.californiaeei.org/curriculum/unit?unitid=62 EEI Curriculum and resources for “Ecosystem Change in California” Grade 8: IS 4 “Sustaining Local and Global Biodiversity” https://www.californiaeei.org/curriculum/unit?unitid=61 EEI Curriculum and resources for “Biodiversity: The Keystone to Life on Earth” We are using curriculum from California's Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) to teach IS 4 in all three grades. A colleague of mine and I will be training teachers in EEI. My thought is that someone may be interested in creating Geoinquiries that are focused on the Instructional Segment for each of the 3 grade levels. I believe teachers would be interested in using those specific Geoinquiries. What are your thoughts? Before January concludes, Happy New Year to all!

A colleague of mine is interested in learning to use the Drone2Map software, so he can teach students how to enhance their digitized maps. Anything that you can share with me about Drone2Map, applications of the software, grants to help purchase the software, examples of maps that your students have created using Drone2Map or something similar would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

California Education and the Environment Initiative lessons are available to teachers in California. They are the result of a law which mandates environmental education within a framework of 5 Environmental Principles. Having taught using the EEI Unit, "Biodiversity: They Keystone to Life on Earth", I knew that a map would greatly help students to visualize the content and help them to see patterns and relationships. Because there aren't enough instructional days (because of other required activities) to complete the NGSS Integrated curriculum, I saw how ArcGIS Online mapping tools would be quite handy to use to enrich the learning experience. A colleague and I volunteered to re-work NGSS Instructional Unit 4, which focuses on some aspect of the environment, by using EEI lessons. At the time, I offered to include ArcGIS Online mapping tools in the modified Instructional Segment. In other words, I have made one map to share with the teachers in spring 2019. I will also have the opportunity to teach the middle school science teachers in our district the fundamentals of mapmaking using ArcGIS Online. I plan to use "Undercover Mapper", "Geographic Features of California" and a carefully selected Geoinquiry. Here is a link to my map and ask for your feedback. I have time to improve it...such as adding pictures, etc., etc. Geographic Features of California I thank you for your comments and help when I have asked for your feedback in the past. I look forward to what insight you can give me with this work. Many thanks, Della
