We are currently running Server2008R2 Standard with SQLServer2008R2 using ArcGis for Server 10.1.1 (build 3143) with ArcGIS 10.1 WebAdapter and ArcSDE 10.1 for SQLServer.

We want to upgrade to Server2012 Standard with SQLServer2012 and also upgrade ArcGIS for Server from 10.1.1 to 10.2.1 with WebAdapter and ArcSDE.

Has anyone in the community done something similar?  If so, we are looking for insight on how to manage this upgrade process so that we have minimal impact to customers and our workforce.

Thanks,

Chad

Yes. Windows Server 2012 is compatible with Microsoft SQL Server 2012(ArcSDE Geodatabase).
http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/system-requirements/10.2/index.html#//015100000070000000

ArcGIS for Server 10.2.1 is compatible with Windows Server 2012
http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/system-requirements/10.2/index.html#//015100000072000000

However there are some issues (editing, labelling) in ArcGIS for Desktop 10.2.1 and I believe those issues will be fixed in 10.2.2 which will be released soon.

nidhinkn,

Do you have any suggestions for preserving our existing data in SDE?  We are thinking about virtualizing our server so that we have that available to us while we are installing the new operating system, SQL, ArcServer and ArcSDE.  What I am concerened about is being able to incorporate our existing SDE back into the new framework of our server.  Does this make sense?

Once the edits are done, you have to Reconcile and Post, followed by Compress(to state 0). Take a complete backup of the database. Once you upgrade the Server, you can restore the database.

Also you can copy the connection file from old server to the new server. However you have to make sure the connection parameters(server name and other details) are correct before connecting to the database from the new server.

ArcSDE Connection File and ArcGIS Server Connection File will be in this location:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\ESRI\Desktop10.2\ArcCatalog
