I'm trying to add a secure feature service from my organization arcgis server. When following ArcGIS Online's instructions (see below) no prompt for credentials is returned just an error message saying the layer doesn't exist or is not accessible. (The service does exist, is accessible and is functioning properly)

"Type the REST URL of the service or document, for example, http://gisserver:6080/arcgis/rest/services/folder/service/MapServer.

To find the REST URL of an ArcGIS Server service, open the Services Directory page, http://gisserver:6080/arcgis/rest/services and browse to the service you want to share. You can then copy the URL from the browser's address bar. Do not append any parameters, such as a token, to the URL.
If you added a secured service that is available externally, enter a user name and password for an account that has access to the service, and select whether or not you want the credentials stored with the service item. If the credentials are not stored with the item, you will be prompted for credentials every time you access the service. If the credentials are stored with the item, you will not be prompted for credentials."

An earlier forum post from a couple of years ago state secured services aren't supported but current online documentation indicates that it is.

Thanks,

After checking with an ESRI staff member, ArcGIS Server secure services at 10.1 and above should be supported, the version I was using was at 9.3.1.

A correction to the issue. I was able to correctly spell out the map service URL, using https:// ...., and was able to get a prompt for username and password. However now the problem is that the error message received when trying to add the item is that "Required:valid service credentials not fully specified". Yet the same credentials are used to view the service directory via a browser and to consume the service within an application.
