When to upgrade the SDE SQL server when going from existing SDE on 10.0 to 10.1?

Hi,
I am upgrading ArcGIS Server from 10.0 to 10.1 and I am running Windows 2008 R2 with IIS on both servers. I have an Enterprise Web Server and an ArcGIS Server that has the SQL Server SDE 10.0 on it also. From all the reading getting ready, my understanding is I uninstall the old version 10.0. Then I install ArcGIS Server 10.1 on the ArcGIS Server. Then I make the web Site on the ArcGIS Server. I register all my SDE gdbs on the ArcGIS Server. I recreate all my web services on the ArcGIS Server. Then I install the Web Apaptor on the Enterprise Web Server. In my reading of the documentation and watching the really helpful short videos on the installation process, I didn't see anything about when or if I would need to upgrade my SDE to 10.1. I do have an ArcSDE_Windows_101... iso file on my installation media. I, of course, have the Desktop and ArcGIS server iso files on the installation media.

Bottom line is do I run the ArcSDE Windows 10.1 install? If I do at which step or point do I run this in the installation process?

Helpful installation videos:

I found the answer to my question. You do not need to upgrade your 10.0 ArcSDE to 10.1 ArcSDE while you are in the process of updating your ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop from 10.0 to 10.1. Below is the Help documentation in the online resources.
Client and geodatabase compatibility: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//003n00000008000000

Upgrading a geodatabase in SQL Server: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/002q/002q000000m9000000.htm

Compatibility when connecting directly from ArcGIS clients to geodatabases in SQL Server:
http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/002q/002q000000n9000000.htm
Connecting from newer clients to older release geodatabases allows you to use the geodatabase without having to upgrade the geodatabase at the same time the clients are upgraded. It also allows you to have mixed-release client installations at your site. For example, if one department uses a custom application that has not been updated to work with 10.1, you can keep the geodatabase at the 9.3 release, keep this group of users on a 9.3 client release, and upgrade the clients for the rest of the agency. Be aware, though, that the 10.1 clients cannot use 10.1 functionality until the geodatabase has been upgraded to 10.1.

???To connect from an ArcGIS client to a previous release enterprise geodatabase, the geodatabase has to be upgraded to the latest service pack or patch for its release. For example, if you want to connect from ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop to a 9.3.1 enterprise geodatabase, you must apply the most recent 9.3.1 service pack or patch to the geodatabase.

Compatibility of ArcGIS 10.1 for Server with previous versions:
http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//0154000005zs000000
Do all the components of my site need to be running the same 10.1 service pack?
You should ensure that the GIS server and Web Adaptor components of your site are running at the same 10.1 service pack level. This should also be the same service pack level that you use with ArcGIS for Desktop.

ArcSDE does not have to be at the same version or service pack level as ArcGIS for Server. See Client and geodatabase compatibility.

Hope this helps someone else!

Hi,
Thanks for the documentation. I read all this and I see how to do the upgrade to the geodatabases and ArcSDE. My question though is do I need to do the ArcSDE during the upgrade of ArcGIS Server from 10.0 to 10.1? If I do need to do this upgrade, at which point do I do this? Before registering my SQL databases?
Thanks,
Janie
