Set Application to Edit Python Scrips in Arc

Does anyone know how to set the application that a python script opens in from an .mxd? Currently when I try to edit a script from arc it opens in notepad, I would prefer to at least work in Idle. I'm using Arcgis 10.1

Geoprocessing --> Geoprocessing Options --> Script Tool Editor/Debugger

You can set the paths to your IDE of choice.

This works except that now the name of the file being edited has been chopped down to an old 8.3 format.  It's like it's DOS.
