Is there a way to publish WMS services to ArcGIS Online from ArcMap? According to the Help, it appears that you have to have an ArcGIS Server connection to do this. The Service Editor that appears from an ArcMap session certainly doesn't show any WMS parameters when you are publishing to AGOL.

No, ArcGIS Online cannot act as a WMS server, if I understand your question correctly.

Thanks,

Just seeing this, Mike-- thank you. Yes, that was the question that I had. Is there any comparison chart available that shows the differences between AGOL hosting/publishing capabilities versus what you can do with native ArcGIS Server at its various licensing levels?

Thanks again,

I'm not aware of any comparison chart, but it's a great idea. At this point, there are only two types of hosted services, tiled map services and feature services. As far as capabilities, off the top of my head...

Tiled map services
- fast display of your data
- tiles build in ArcGIS Online
- support for queries with an associated feature service
- no dynamic mapping
Feature services
- supports editing
- ability to track edits
- supports owner based editing (only creator of a feature can edit it)
- Ability to download data via shapefile for local synchronization

Over time, we'll be adding to the hosted capabilities.

Thanks,

Mike
