ArcMap log available?

We have a custom build extension for ArcMap. User sometime can't see the extension displayed on ArcMap for various reason. For example, the old extension register keys are not cleanup properly, or .NET Framworks 3.5 and 3.5 SP1 is not installed on user machine. Is there an ArcMap log file can tell why the extension can't be loaded into ArcMap? How to turn on the ArcMap log function?
