Hi Rebecca, If I use ArcSDE Server to create a cache - that would be the new cache format. The tool I am using though is the data management tool - thus it is not related to Server. Is purely an mxd and the tile cache tool [Not the server cache tool]. This tool appears to create the 10.2.2 cache. I agree with your comments in relation to the 10.2.2 cache format and compatibility. All our server caches are currently in the 10.2.2 format, even though we are running 10.3 server. It does make it more difficult when we create skeleton cache services, and have not as yet looked at the full implications of moving to the 10.3 format. Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, I note in the What’s New in 10.3 that ArcGIS Server creates a compact cache in an improved format. This was achieved by including the tile index information (.bundlx files) inside the .bundle files. So … when I use the Data Management Tools > Tile Cache > Mange Tile Cache Tool to build a cache from an MXD, I was surprised to see the format is the old cache format, as opposed to the new cache format. Why is this so? When can we expect to see the ArcGIS Desktop cache tools create a cache in the new format? One can also see this in the conf.xml file associated with the cache: This is when a cache is created in ArcGIS Server: <StorageFormat>esriMapCacheStorageModeCompactV2</StorageFormat> This is from the cache created in Desktop: <StorageFormat>esriMapCacheStorageModeCompact</StorageFormat> I suppose this leads to other questions. Should there be a flag in ArcGIS Server to choose the cache format? PS: I note Exporting a cache using the Export Map Server Cache tool will continue to use the previous compact cache storage format which does not include the performance improvements noted above. I also note: "The improved compact cache storage format is always expected to be associated with a service." Maybe this is by design? Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, I am aware that an ArcGIS Online subscription comes with every ArcGIS for Desktop license that is current on maintenance - and this gives the user access to ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro. My question is how his relates to Concurrent Licenses for Desktop when using FlexLM. With a Concurrent License, using the license manager pool, you may have say 50 licenses that are in use at any one time. This could relate to say 150 people that use the licenses. Indeed, the cost of a Concurrent license is around 3 times that of a desktop license (from memory). Therefore, when using ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Online > when we have purchased Concurrent licenses, is there a rate at which the ArcGIS Pro / ArcGIS Online licenses are distributed - say 3 named users for each concurrent license? And along the same lines - If I have an ELA which in theory gives me unlimited access to esri sortware - does this give me unlimited number of ArcGIS Online named users? The license models are fundamentally different - so I can see the dilemma. There is always a solution though. Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, I have had some correspondence with the ArcGIS for Desktop team, and can let you know they appreciate the feedback, and are listening to what you are saying. It was never esri's intention for users to lose access to their work due to whatever reason they may have for not being able to continue with maintenance, and esri are seriously looking into ways in which this can be addressed in the future. I would suggest once esri finalize the details, they will make a public announcement. Thanks to all that read the thread, to the replies, and the professionalism of all. We can, and do make a difference. Cheers, Mark

Hi Graeme, Has the response been similar to this thread? We have an esri Directions on Friday. It will be interesting if esri address the issue up front, or if it comes up in discussion. Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, This article appears in Sensors and Systems today, one of the most prominent GIS information sources online. It was written in part based on the discussions here. How has cloud computing added friction in the geospatial software space? https://sensorsandsystems.com/dialog/perspectives/36193-how-has-cloud-computing-added-friction-in-the-geospatial-software-space.html While they refrain from mention of specific software or companies, they are implied. Suggestion is that esri are generally a customer-centric organization, and suggest the pressure be kept up to them. Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, What I find interesting is there a paradigm shift in the way the licenses are managed - but have you seen an announcement from Esri in relation to the new license model? Is it obvious from the documentation there is a change? When you talk to the Esri client managers, why are they so sheepish about it? It appears to me Esri have implemented a new license model by stealth, and really don't want to discuss it, or the implications of the pricing model, or the business implications to their enterprise customers. We can sit around and complain about it, or we can stop wasting our breath and do something. My aim is to make people aware of the change, and to think about the implications. Then to talk to Esri if they are not happy. Esri are a good corporate citizen and do listen to the users. I believe if people act now, we can make a difference, and we can make a change. Or we can sit around and complain. Do something. Call your client manager and ask for a meeting. Bring it up at your local Esri events, bring it up at UC. Have those conversations with Esri. As Jack says - you can make a difference. Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, I am just installing the latest release of ArcGIS Pro, and was interesting in the license agreement that comes up in the dialog that everyone just says “I agree”. My understanding is that ArcGIS Pro is a “Term License” as per the definition, and is not available as a “Perpetual License”, as per the definitions. 8. "Term License" means a license or access provided for use of a Product for a limited time period ("Term") or on a subscription or transaction basis. 9. "Perpetual License" means a license to use a version of the Product, for which applicable license fees have been paid, indefinitely, unless terminated by Esri or Licensee as authorized under this Agreement. Esri may want to alter the license agreement everyone signs off on. State that ArcGIS Pro is a Term License only at the very least. At the very minimum, Esri could stick it in the notes, as you have with the Home Use Program. All ArcGIS for Home Use Program Products are provided as Term Licenses and are identified on Esri's Home Use Program website found at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-home or Licensee's authorized distributor's website. Esri may also want to review this: http://www.esri.com/legal Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, I would like to clarify some additional information we have just discovered. Firstly, to access ArcGIS Pro Licenses requires a cloud based ArcGIS Online Named user - no surprises there, as it is covered in the documentation. What does not appear to be in the Documentation is that ArcGIS Pro is a subscription service, temporary use license - it will expire if you stop paying maintenance. This would appear to be a paradigm shift in the current permanent Esri license model. PS: The issue in relation to us being able to get ArcGIS Pro to connect to ArcGIS Online to obtain the license is due to a bug where ArcGIS Pro does not play well with authenticated proxy servers. BUG-000083997 - ArcGIS Pro cannot communicate through an Authenticated Forward Proxy. "HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required" Cheers, Mark

One of the main questions here is have Esri been up front, honest, and transparent in relation to what would appear to be a new license model? Have Esri made it clear ArcGIS Pro is a subscription, temporary-use license? Can anyone point out in the documentation where is specifically says ArcGIS Pro will expire when maintenance is not paid? No - they have not. And this is what makes people suspicious.

Hi Graeme, It is interesting your have raised that point. At the beginning of March, even though we had the purchase order in for our maintenance, we saw our licenses for ArcGIS Pro go to 0 (the big Zero). It took Esri over a day to fix the problem. This is what made us aware of what would seem a shift in the licensing of ArcGIS. I don't think people are aware of this change. I suspect a shift to subscription licenses should generate some debate and discussion, so please feel free to contact your Esri manager to discuss further and confirm this advice is correct. Cheers, Mark

Hi Graeme, Our advice is: "As long as your desktop licenses are maintained, the associated ArcGIS Pro licenses will remain available. Should you decide to not renew the maintenance, the core Desktop software (ArcMap, ArcCatalog) will continue to work, but the associated ArcGIS Pro licenses will be revoked." Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, After discussions with Esri Australia, it is our understanding ArcGIS Pro is only available as a subscription, cloud based license that will expire if you choose to stop paying maintenance. This would appear to be a paradigm shift in the current permanent license model. It is also striking there appears to be no Esri documentation spelling this out. Were other people aware that ArcGIS Pro is a cloud based subscription license, that expires if you stop maintenance? What do you think? Additional notes: ArcGIS Pro licensing: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis-pro/licensing Cheers, Mark
