It all depends on your comfort level with SDE permissions and your desired product.  The mosaic dataset seems will work in either medium.  If you plan on publishing the mosaic dataset the normal permission issues are necessary to see the data and if you create the overviews in the SDE, then Server will need permission to access the database.  There are also some performance issues at this point with SDE, where the file based version will be quicker.  Also pay attention on the same help document, the requirements to make the data accessible. What is your DEM bit depth?  If it is not 32 bit float then that is the issue.  The Interpolate Shape tool will only reflect the values of the DEM with regards to the z values.  If you have an integer raster, then the values will be integer. ... View more

For your raster, what is the value set for the NoData in the source properties?  Also is your raster an irregular shape?  If so, then there will be extra pixels added to the created raster to make it square.  Also as a courtesy, the program will usually add one pixel around the outside to avoid losing data.  The default behavior in ArcMap is to provide ways to handle the display of NoData, not necessarily eliminate it entirely. ... I am glad that the TIN was able to display it in a manner you liked. Also as you pointed out, in the absence of data, it will get weird in places.  So the tools originally mentioned are better adapted to resolve the lack of data and smooth it out, ie Topo to Raster.  For your requirement of having the contours followed precisely, there are some trade offs. Is your raster 18 gigs for the uncompressed size or 18 gigs on disk?  Generally speaking, ecws are highly compressed and are much larger when it comes to uncompressed size. I am not sure an irregular shape would be breaking your Spatial Analyst tools.  Perhaps the format, size or some other factor is causing the issue?  What output format are you using?  What bit depth are you exporting to?  How large is your raster file size wize?  Which Spatial Analyst Tools are you using?  If you are having specific issues with a tool or dataset, then I would recommend contacting Esri Support and creating an incident for specific help, but if you can answer the questions above perhaps something will seem to cause it. ... Have you tried to create the TIN/Terrain?  That might be better for containing the points from your description. So you created a TIN and a raster?  The error message indicates that the tool could not resolve the input and that it is invalid.  Is the location on a network? What is the file format of the raster?  Do you have a similarly named file in the same folder or in the table of contents?  Can you open the file in ArcMap? If the raster format is one of the supported formats, then it should work provided the observer is above the ground.  Pay attention to the file format and be sure it is the type listed not just the same extension. ... The thine plate spline interpolation technique is used in the Topo to Raster tool per the help, which should force the interpolation to match at the specific elevation points, but may be adjusted slightly during the iterations.  The iterations inherent in the tool are used to create a 'hydro-logically correct model.'  You can control the number of iterations it performs in the tool.  If you are looking for an additional look, I would consider Terrain/TIN generation to utilize the points and lines.  Generally I would make the points mass points and the contours soft breaklines, but if you are adamant that they must be maintained, then make the hard breaklines.  In practice this sometimes creates stair steps in the output but the values should match at the contour for your client. ...
