Laura Miles The PHP, .Net, or Java proxies are functionally equivalent. Which one to pick depends primarily on what type of web server you are using. If you are using IIS as your webserver, using the .Net proxy is the easiest to set up.

First, I'm not familiar with IBM worklight.... As for the routing, no a proxy is not needed, but if you don't use it, the users of your application would be prompted to log in. You can test/see this in action by deleting the "urlUtils.addProxyRule" from this sandbox sample or or this sandbox sample.

The geodesicBuffer takes a number for the units. Try specify 9002 as the third argument. See https://developers.arcgis.com/javascript/jsapi/esri.geometry.geometryengine-amd.html#geodesicbuffer which has a link to esriSRUnitType Constants. While not technically a bug, this syntax is likely to change for the next version.

It wasn't working unless your URL was listed in the http://basemap.nationalmap.gov/crossdomain.xml For now, we've removed that basemap from the default basemap gallery so there should be no more error messages about that service when starting your flexviewers.
